1337shadow··on What ever happened to webrings? (2015)
Usually those are paid for by webmasters, such as with linkfarm.net
1337shadow··on Twitter to ban unlabelled parody accounts
It used to be so much more free before yes https://blog.twitter.com/en_us/topics/company/2020/suspensio...

Anyway, break the ToS of a any service and you'll get suspended, I fail to see where the debate is right there.

The title of the article is misleading, the comedian account was not unlabeled: it was labeled as certified.

And why this? https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/E-7-2014-00212...
1337shadow··on Being Ridiculed for My Open Source Project (2013)
A lot of Open Source maintainers are dicks which they compensate for with pointless virtue signaling.
1337shadow··on Twitter to ban unlabelled parody accounts
Actually, the user was benefiting from the blue checkmark of "verified account" and changed name and photo to "Elon Musk", that's got to be clearly a violation of twitter verified account terms, don't you think?
1337shadow··on Twitter to ban unlabelled parody accounts
So you'd be happy if people created social network profiles pretending to be you and posting whatever they want people to believe you said because of free speech? Sounds pretty weird, are you sure you don't have a law against such abuse?

I thought free speech was me saying what I want, not a free pass to mislead people to believe I said something I didn't.

1337shadow··on Twitter to ban unlabelled parody accounts
The whole "Elon backing off the twitter deal" story was about fake accounts wasn't it?
1337shadow··on Twitter to ban unlabelled parody accounts
Usurpating identities is illegal, parodies are not. Where exactly is the debate here?
1337shadow··on Tell HN: The regret of parenting and how to handle it
> Did you ever think about how you'll never again be able to stay up all night and research new technologies, or have a hobby like kayaking, or .. All because of parenting?

All false. Yes, there is a time like that, but then your kids will grow up and will go sailing and hacking with you, it's not never. Also yes, you'll learn to live with less sleep, for a while.

Anyway, what a funny crisis, at times where money is god, where individual happiness is searched for through product and service consumption, people don't even know why have kids anymore, what a great testimony about our civilisation's decline.

1337shadow··on The PS5 Has Been Jailbroken
Except if you count Android and servers, then Linux is the most deployed system in the world.
1337shadow··on After self-hosting my email for twenty-three years I have thrown in the towel
Apparently people who want to self host email instead of paying some big tech
1337shadow··on We clone a running VM in 2 seconds
Well that's going to be a very exensive CI, when virt-lightning spawns a VM in less than 10 seconds with virtio, and you can have plenty on a dedicated server, which you probably have for CI because CI runs faster on dedicated hardware.
1337shadow··on Ask HN: Is there a developer laptop that does not suck and is not a Mac in 2022?
I have Lenovo which offers a great on-site support, have been using Thinkpad X since X201 or something and now am extremely happy with Thinkpad P14s with 42G of RAM and especially an AMD Ryzen 7 Pro with 16 threads and which provides much better 3D hardware than what Intel provides, and still much cheaper. Only problem is battery that is not as great as Thinkpad X when you can upgrade to a double battery in addition to the one that's inside the laptop itself. I use Linux.
1337shadow··on Notre Dame rises again
Nice little story about how the people burnt Notre Dame a couple centuries ago. This makes me think about how Notre Dame has been rising for a millennium, how are we supposed to believe it "took fire" exactly? Cause the article is clear: last time it burnt like that it was because people did it on purpose. Do you think whoever did this has been forgiven, or "is yet to be found"?

1337shadow··on PyPI: Python packets steal AWS keys from users
Apparently they are working on it in PEP-480
1337shadow··on Logging in Python like a pro
By default, use INFO to tell what has been done, use DEBUG to describe what's going to be done and how it's deciding it.
1337shadow··on Logging in Python like a pro
To inherit the logger attribute in subclasses?? Save an import?
1337shadow··on Logging in Python like a pro
Great idea but how do you work this out in a container where the python process is PID 1?
1337shadow··on Logging in Python like a pro
Maybe worth trying pylogctx and python-logging-loki or see how it's done there.
1337shadow··on Logging in Python like a pro
Take a look at pylogctx maybe it'll do what you need.
1337shadow··on Ask HN: What do you use to build auth?
Whatever the server side framework offers natively, plus framework specific plugins such as for OTP login or whatnot, depending on the project. If your framework doesn't take care of authentication for you, it's probably not production ready.
1337shadow··on PyPI: Python packets steal AWS keys from users
We need the GPG feature in pip to be finished. We can currently upload signed packages, but pip won't check if you thrust the keys. Pip should include a keyring system and prevent people from installing packages without a signature that has a certain thrust level without explicit whitelist or interactivity.

Unpoly.js also good
1337shadow··on Ask HN: What’s a good laptop for software development at around $2k?
Only drawback of P14s is battery which you can't upgrade, otherwise great to have an AMD Ryzen with 16 cores and 48 gigs or RAM.
1337shadow··on What Is at Stake in Ukraine
> trove of e-mails on Hunter Biden’s infamous laptop — the existence of which was exclusively reported by The Post in October 2020 — found that he played a role in helping a California defense contractor analyze killer diseases and bioweapons in Ukraine.

https://nypost.com/2022/03/26/hunter-biden-played-role-in-fu...

> In April 2014, Metabiota vice president Mary Guttieri wrote a memo to Hunter outlining how they could 'assert Ukraine's cultural and economic independence from Russia'. 'Thanks so much for taking time out of your intense schedule to meet with Kathy [Dimeo, Metabiota executive] and I on Tuesday. We very much enjoyed our discussion,' Guttieri wrote

Thanks to unlimited soviet bioweapons to dismantle I imagine.

Anyway, it's always the soviets and conspirationists isn't it, just like for the chemical weapons of mass destruction in Irak.

Just take the money for the gas, but then don't complain about CO2 emissions and especially don't lecture the rest of the world.

1337shadow··on What Is at Stake in Ukraine
America is ripping us off again, just like when they made Peugeot PSA leave Iran which was its biggest market after France ... to replace it with GE.

I hope you're happy now that we're buying your expensive gas which travels over the atlantic with tankers.

And wtf is Biden doing financing biolabs in a corrupt country at the doors of Russia anyway? f this

1337shadow··on What Is at Stake in Ukraine
Because it's what they are doing all along.

Example:

> Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine to force it to renounce the West and to submit to the Kremlin

I wonder what's their source, based on Putin's declarations this should be:

> Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine to force it to renounce the West and to remain neutral because it's located between the west and russia and because the west promised it
