12elephant··on Exploration into the Origins of the Wuhan Strain of Coronavirus (2019-NCoV)
Ah yes, I am familiar with that thread – I've been following it.

One thing does strike me as strange. The common ancestor here, RaTG13, was only sequenced and published by Shi's lab in Wuhan in late January. Despite supposedly being sequenced in 2013. Shi's Wuhan lab is the same one in question in this article regarding a potential leak.

Is this unusual for a lab to do, or is this common practice?

Others have asked this question in the Twitter thread you posted, but no one has responded so far as I can see. E.g:

12elephant··on Vinod Khosla Wins Ruling Threatening Public Beach Access
How is not building an access road to a private beach causing harm?

The fact that people feel entitled to tell others what to do with their own private property is sickening.

12elephant··on TikTok: Cheerfulness and censorship
Alex Jones, for example, has been removed from YouTube and Facebook.
12elephant··on Court: Suspicionless Searches of Travelers’ Phones and Laptops Unconstitutional
My sentiment exactly! To me, the essence of America is captured in the New Hampshire state motto: "Live free or die".

There are some people who don't vibe with this sort of philosophy. But thank God the USA exists for those of us that do!

How is the MAGA hat a threat?

I'm a minority. Not only do I not think it's threatening, I'm even considering buying a few.

Not for political reasons, but just because its become so iconic I think they'll be worth a lot more as vintage items in 10-20 years.

What is the Zybourne Clock? A quick google shows that it is a defunct game?
12elephant··on Talk to People on the Telephone
Is this sarcasm? That sounds a lot like snapchat.

Or just sending videos via SMS instead of text.

12elephant··on A parrot has a question for humans
I don't think the researcher means to imply Koko understands rhymes. Rather her hearing is not fine-tuned enough to hear the subtle difference between the sounds "nipple" and "people". So she uses them interchangeably.
12elephant··on I'm a College Professor Who Faked Dissertation Data on the Side
what do you mean by "strong undercurrent of scarcity"?
12elephant··on New bill would ban autoplay videos and endless scrolling
You turn off autoplay by exiting netflix.
12elephant··on What Even Is a Number?
This is the same response I gave to throwawaymath:

The original post is called "What even is a number?". The comment I replied to tried to answer that question with "some formalism".

What I'm saying is: questioning foundations leads you to new foundations. New foundations that you can then question all over again. It's turtles all the way down.

If you're actually looking to use math, this is a futile exercise. It works, so just use it. Essentially, I am re-iterating von Neumann's statement:

> In mathematics you don't understand things. You just get used to them.

An axiom is simply something made up.

At the end of the day, all of our Mathematics rests on foundations that are made up.

It's difficult to say what the empty set is. Because it isn't really anything at all.

Your castle is built on sand. What, then, is {}?
12elephant··on People older than 65 share the most fake news, a new study finds
Maybe some people just prefer the authoritarian model.

It is not an objective truth that non-authoritarianism > authoritarianism. That's just, like, an opinion, man.

Further: when has Russia not been an authoritarian state?

So, does being a Putin fan imply one has 'gone off the deep end'?

Working in the same place, in my anecdotal experience, leads to better communication. A couple orders of magnitude better.

Face-to-face communication provides much higher "bandwidth" than text-based.
