1270018080··on Truth Social losses $300M on Q1
Minus the foreign money laundering/bribery and fanatic cult driving up the valuation, what do you think it's actually worth? $200 mil? I am giving it a generous 50x multiple on revenue.
1270018080··on Show HN: BandMatch – “Tinder” but for finding musicians to create bands/collab
It's been awhile since I've seen one of these. The Tinder of ________ is a vintage meme in tech entrepreneurship.
1270018080··on Notes on El Salvador
I mean an "economic surplus" vacuum. There's lots of money to be made doing human and drug trafficking and the whole market in a country just got wiped out. And the citizens there are still poor. So it's only a matter of time before a group fills the void.
1270018080··on Notes on El Salvador
I think this reduction in crime is only temporary. You still have a poor country full of desperate people, and it's only a matter of time before the criminal enterprise vacuum gets filled by the next generation. The slate did get wiped clean, but the root cause is still there.

> But the more general idea that the arrangement of the solar system when you were born affects your personality (among other things) -- this is obviously reasonable.

Not even remotely reasonable in any capacity.

1270018080··on Chasing Passive Income, Americans Turn to Vending Machines
People don't want actual returns that aren't sacked with fees and conditions. They want get rich quick schemes. Their financial instrument needs to be counter cultural somehow. And with an affinity for conspiracy theories and no financial literacy, low expense ratio index funds are the enemy.

Where to put excess capital for the average person is a solved problem. People just want to be different.

The steaks where they cut off all of the rotten parts so you're not eating rotten meat? Yeah.
1270018080··on A modest proposal for reducing mail traffic (1996)
I think about all of the emissions generated from software every day. I feel a little bit better when I refactor an endpoint from a p99 of 3 minute to 3 seconds. Then feel worse when I realize a youtuber canceled out those gains 100x over when they uploaded a 4k clickbait video about some drama happening on Twitch.

It's more of a broad fear of change/technology/the modern age in Germany. Homeopathy is considered real medicine there even today. Physical paperwork for all of the bureaucracy, and of course the bureaucracy there is legendary. Credit cards fall under a similar umbrella.
1270018080··on The changing face of post-pandemic New York City
Another good example of resilience.

My least favorite genre is the 100 papers saying X is bad to eat and 100 saying X is good to eat. Just have common sense and eat everything in moderation. Food absolutists are weird/annoying. Especially the trad-fascist "seed oils and soy bad, red meat good" crowd. Just a bunch of dorks.
1270018080··on Binance and CEO admit financial crimes, billions coughed up to US govt
Which was 99.9% of the NFT market. I wonder how much of it is the crypto market. Probably not much lower.

1270018080··on Daily energy expenditure through the human life course
People walk 10k steps a day and stay fat because they eat too much.
1270018080··on Support for Third U.S. Political Party Up to 63%
Third parties will never happen in first past the post elections. 2 parties will have enough of the general platforms to get 51% and 49% of the every single time. And if you’re a voter who can think rationally, you’ll vote for the big party that’s close enough rather than throw your vote away on a 3rd party vote.

If there are any flash in the pan third parties, their platform will get absorbed by the big 2 and it’ll disappear.

A third party is fundamentally irrelevant in the design of our democracy. This poll should be 0% support.
