Correction: the author accepted a grant for X options, that they must exercise to own. The author exercised a percentage of the options. They did not exercise all of their options. They left the company without exercising the remaining options. This is equivalent to forfeiting the options.

Now, 25 years later the author is preparing a litigation.

Unfortunately this project has a case of dread with every update to me. To see what is being force changed, worse support or even removed features.

Looks like this release breaks Intel Macs. Very very sad. Not even 5+ year old hardware is apparently supportable to some devs

This was not my experience at all on the fold. Only a very few small selection of apps did this. All were video game related, which made sense. Changing the resolution forced a restart.
12345hn6789··on Teaching my kid to code with a modern MUD
A bit sad to see the author "10xing" his passion project with LLMs. I ended up moving one of my older projects in a similar way and I feel gross about it now. As if I didn't even work on it originally. I may just hard reset the LLM commits off my tree entirely at this point.

Hopefully he doesn't come to regret it either.

12345hn6789··on The Nixpkgs core team has disbanded
Gave up participating in the community once Jon Ringer was banned / the drama. Pretty much revealed how political the community is. Ironically I think the better a tool solves a problem the more radical the community gets. We don't have to bicker over how to solve the problem and thus people find another avenue.

Anyways the writing was on the wall for this and Nix is dying.

"Once, in early 2002, when the index servers went down, Jeff Dean answered user queries manually for two hours. Evals showed a quality improvement of 5 points."

ahahah golden.

Will be following their journey

FYI android 17 fixes the bugs in the Bluetooth stack that previously required root to fix. But, this app still charges $5 for using features your air pods have. I'll be spending my afternoon forking and enabling them.

The coin flip game does not work. I tossed 2 coins and it broke after that. You cannot progress forward.

Not a great start for "a generational leap in model effectiveness"

12345hn6789··on We've made the world too complicated
great post,

> Before you’ve noticed important details they are, of course, basically invisible. It’s hard to put your attention on them because you don’t even know what you’re looking for. But after you see them they quickly become so integrated into your intuitive models of the world that they become essentially transparent.

That quote really stuck out to me. Personally I help myself with this frequently by attempting to write down steps to recreate guides or other basic material - rubber ducking to a beginner essentially.

Flakes are the defacto standard and you're leaving one huge point out. Flake files come with flake lock files. You cannot get lockfiles without using flakes.

This user actively gets paid off of how many downloads their packages get, which makes sense why there are so many. As well as the attitude to change others repositories to use his packages

I just asked gemini 3 5 times: `what temperature I should take a waterfowl out of the oven`

and received generic advice every single time it gave nearly identical charts. 165F was in every response. LLMs are unpredictable yes. But I am more skeptical it would give incorrect answers (raw goose) rather than your mother preparing the fowl wrong.

Cooking correctly is a skill, just as prompting is. Ask 10 people how to cook fowl and their answers will mimic the LLM.

12345hn6789··on 5,300-year-old 'bow drill' rewrites story of ancient Egyptian tools
Yes these are found in a few places in Egypt and notably some are dug vertically [0]. Along with these "scoop" marks there are a few tombs "boxes at serapeum" that have nearly perfectly squared off cuts and perfectly smooth surfaces. [1] These are the main points of contention

We are leaning into conspiracy theories / not accepted history but making these marks with the currently thought tools seems quite insensible, and are related to the article. Folks seem to think we have not found the real tools that created these structures. The vertical inward scoop marks are especially suspect.
