Have you heard of things like "Civil Assets Forfeiture"?

Where the USG sues the money and not you. And expects the money to defend itself?

1024core··on Insights on Teufel’s first open-source speaker
Tangential question: are there any good quality Bluetooth speakers that feature some speech recognition and an interface with YouTube Music/Amazon Music so I can just say: "hey speaker, play Coldplay".

My Google Home speaker (early version) is getting long in the tooth and has become flaky.

1024core··on Beyond Meat fights for survival
As a vegetarian, the problem with Beyond Meat (and other such products) is that they're too close to the original. I'm a vegetarian; I don't want to eat meat. If what I'm eating tastes too close to meat, I begin doubting it. It has happened several times in the past where I've been served (real) meat when I explicitly asked for a non-meat version (e.g. "beef burrito" instead of "bean burrito", etc.)

This is why I avoid Beyond Meat (and Impossible) products: too close for comfort.

Vegetables and grains have a great taste in themselves; they don't need to imitate meat to be tasty!

1024core··on Coding with LLMs in the summer of 2025 – an update
I have found that if I ask the LLM to first _describe_ to me what it wants to do without writing any code, then the subsequent code generated has much higher quality. I will ask for a detailed description of the things it wants to do, give it some feedback and after a couple of iterations, tell it to go ahead and implement it.

1024core··on From engineer to manager: A practical guide to your first months in leadership
It is very sad to see that in many companies, great engineers are forced to take on management roles to keep progressing in their careers. It seems to be the only path forward in many big companies.

The writer seems to have gotten his "Sai Baba"s mixed up. The statue seems to be of the more modern one ( Sathya Sai Baba, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sathya_Sai_Baba ) who passed away in 2011, and not the OG Shirdi Sai Baba: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sai_Baba_of_Shirdi

> but in my opinion, the most rewarding point of travelling is: to sit with, and spend time with The Other ...

I didn't grow up with grandparents, so I have a natural affinity for grandmas. Some of my most cherished moments have been interacting with old ladies in places like Cinque Terre, Portofino, Brussels, Tokyo, NYC etc. I like to walk around the neighborhoods, off the beaten track, and if I get a chance to interact with an old lady, even better.

1024core··on Backyard Coffee and Jazz in Kyoto
I remember roaming around the back alleys of Tokyo, as I'm wont to do to get a true feel for any place I'm visiting, and came across bicycles parked on sidewalks, covered with vines. Those bikes must've been there for several years.

Coming from SF, a couple of thoughts came to mind: first: wow these bikes have been sitting here for a long time. And second: this must be a _really_ safe place, because in SF, a bike parked outside won't last a day or two.

Funny thing is: the area didn't look rundown or anything. It was clean and well maintained. Except for the bikes in vines.

1024core··on U.S. bombs Iranian nuclear sites
You do know that there are currently Jews in Iran, including a member of Parliament or two?
1024core··on U.S. bombs Iranian nuclear sites
US is getting sucked into a 1300-year old Shia-Sunni conflict.

Personally, I don't understand why Iran had to meddle in Palestine. When Palestine's own neighbors don't give a rat's ass for the suffering of the Palestinians, who are these mullahs sitting 1000 mi away to get involved?

After the first Gulf War itself, Iranian rulers should have seen the light and stayed tf out of the US's way (and Israel might just be the 51st state, practically speaking). Just work on improving your economy, educating your kids, building up your infrastructure and turn Iran into one of the world's top economies.

But noooo...... those idiots had to get involved in Palestine: supporting Hamas, Hezbollah, etc.... WHY? Just why?!?

1024core··on Waymo rides cost more than Uber or Lyft and people are paying anyway
Supply. There may not be enough Waymos sitting around to satisfy all of the demand at a point in time.
1024core··on Waymo rides cost more than Uber or Lyft and people are paying anyway
The other day I almost got ran over by an old lady in her old Volvo wagon at a stop sign. She seemed to have gotten confused a little and was turning left but couldn't figure out the right move to make. People behind her honked and she decided to just go for it. I happened to be in the crosswalk and just happened to look over at the honking, and saw her coming, so managed to jump out of her way.

She was easily over 90, if not over 95.

People like her could really benefit from a personal Waymo. Just sell a car with FSD built in, at the level of a Waymo, and bam! That would make so many senior citizens' lives easier!

1024core··on Meta invests $14.3B in Scale AI to kick-start superintelligence lab
I haven't read the article yet (I'm about to) but I'm curious: what are Yann's views on this? He's been pretty vocal that LLMs won't lead to AGI.

Edit: read the article. No mention of Yann. What kind of journalists are these people, to not get viewpoints from different angles? They might as well just reproduce press releases and be done with it.

1024core··on Online sports betting: As you do well, they cut you off
One spring I wanted to checkout the parks near Vegas: Valley of Fire, Hoover Dam, etc. But I stayed in Vegas because the cheapest hotels were there.

Every evening, after a day of hiking, I would walk into a casino, sit down at the gambling machine, insert a $20 bill, and hit "drink service". A few minutes later a free beer emerged, and I promptly hit "cash out", collected my $20 and walked away (after a stop at the free popcorn machine too).

I think I may have come away with more than 80% of their clientele.

1024core··on How to live on $432 a month in America
I don't think living in the boonies is for everyone.

I was in South-Eastern California just visiting desolate areas. One place I stayed at had absolutely nothing: the nearest place to get food or gas was Bishop, CA, a 50-minute drive. Coming from a big city the desolation is appealing at first, but gets tiring pretty soon.
