0zemp2c··on Group behind 'cheerful' San Francisco fentanyl ads explains them
they aren't delivering the truly great news that all SF residents should indeed cheer about...

right now, the number of fentanyl users on the streets of SF is the lowest it will ever be

so go out! celebrate! by time your cheers end the moment will have passed and the numer will have increased (to a new it-will-never-again-be-this-low, so I guess you can celebrate that too?)

0zemp2c··on Dell goes back on WFH pledge, forces employees to come back to the office
it has indeed "budged" from 92% to 56%
0zemp2c··on Google has a consumer loyalty problem with their Pixel phones
The Pixel business has failed

Forget about challenging Apple...the Pixel line barely competes with Samsung. There is no way this is a win for Google, and its long past time they gave it up.

Quality and software issues (from Google!) plague these phones. Even now, there is a trending story of an update that is causing phones to get hot...and this is from Google who controls the software, hardware, deployment...

And then there is the pure junk like the Pixel Watch and the upcoming tablet...inferior products that should never have been brought to market. Were even 100k Pixel Watches sold?

I was loyal until my Pixel 3 swelled to the point I was concerned it would catch fire

After that, back to Samsung...no problems since

Even if the Pixel phones were great products...they don't sell in volume. Time for Google to accept that Samsung runs the Android market.

0zemp2c··on New York City passes law barring weight discrimination
Its not trolling, in many Doctor's offices it is already accepted practice for patients to deny having their weight measured at all during a physical

We are within two years of a prominent lawsuit based on a patient being recommended weight management, if it hasn't happened already

Would you mind not elevating your personal beliefs to a community standard? Particularly when you may be factually wrong?

BTW there are already many complaints about "flagging" being used to remove content that is valid but merely surprising to people...its probably time to take away people's black markers

0zemp2c··on Post-9/11 wars have contributed to some 4.5M deaths, report suggests
"whataboutism" be damned, its crazy how ignorant Americans are of the toll of the "War On Terror" while grandstanding over Ukraine

hundreds of thousands dead in Afghanistan. The UN believes nearly half killed were children. Innocents being killed by drones pretty much at the moment Obama was receiving his Nobel Peace Prize

Iraq conflict + resulting civil war caused by our invasion is estimated at 1 million dead, officially one of the top ten worst conflicts in human history

Worst of all, the capital we used to do this could have rebuilt America twice

0zemp2c··on Apple to occupy 90% of TSMC 3nm capacity in 2023
...and when M3 laptops come to market, M1 laptops (10x the performance 95% of users will need) will drop to $499, a giant shovel of dirt spread over the Wintel coffin
0zemp2c··on A former pilot on why autonomous vehicles are so risky
> FSD has been 5 years away for… 15 years now?

this was only Elon-time hallucinations that made for great marketing

you won't get to Mars on Elon-time either, but that doesn't mean you won't get there

0zemp2c··on A former pilot on why autonomous vehicles are so risky
shrug, I'm older than her, so the age thing doesn't resonate with me

I appreciate her credentials, but I don't see why her statements are somehow unassailable

and I stick by my point that her history as a fighter pilot has no bearing

not sure where your "gender" point comes from? other than using the pronoun, I made no claims based on gender

0zemp2c··on A former pilot on why autonomous vehicles are so risky
human can't handle "ALL conditions ALL OF THE TIME" either

this is a false goal that doesn't exist in the real world

cars, planes, trains, all automation of any kind, all the code you ever wrote, nuclear power plants...all this and more operates with some fallibility that is deemed acceptable given the benefits

no one is excusing AV accidents that seem to defy common sense (randomly driving into barriers etc)...but humans fail in these ways too, every day

0zemp2c··on U.S. Military Observers and Why They Are Needed in Ukraine
We have observers, they are called satellites, twitter, tiktok, CNN, whatsapp, Ukrainians who record and tell the US everything, etc etc

What else do you need to know? Its not 1855

I mean, we already have people on the ground there, informally, this has already been leaked. If we put someone in uniform, and they get shot, then the US has to respond...

0zemp2c··on America's Surprise Revival: The Suburbs
Suburbs are where the common citizenry beat a strategic retreat - the war for the cores of our major cities was lost long ago to the allied forces of the ultra rich and homeless drug users. I don't even think the war analogy is sensational...we were literally pushed out of our own inner cities by an invading army.

Short of nuclear war, I don't see the number of homeless drug users ever declining in major US cities, ever. There are more today than last month. There will be more next year than today. We lost, they won. But we have to live somewhere.

Soon the best suburbs will be gated if not already....gated communities don't have homeless drug users. In the next ten years I predict there will be a membership-only suburb with a population over 100k.

0zemp2c··on Gmail is showing ads in the middle of the inbox

0zemp2c··on Gmail is showing ads in the middle of the inbox

do you really think ad money flows to creators?

0zemp2c··on Arianespace CEO: Europe won't have reusable rockets for another decade
Ford and GM can't ever follow through on their own BS and become "electric only"

What is GM's cash cow? Pickups and the Tahoe/Yukon/Suburban/Escalade platform...pretty much the polar opposite of "environmentally conscious" products

Ford? Same thing, monster F150s

These companies aren't killing their cash cows

Indeed, I expect both companies to dramatically tone down the rhetoric on EVs soon and just refer to them as "alternatives"

Or even worse, start PR campaigns highlighting the inconveniences (charging times etc) of EVs

0zemp2c··on April Jobs Report Shows Hiring Remained Robust in a Slowing Economy
US job market is very robust, no one is crying for overcompensated techies anymore, it's time to be flexible and pick up opportunities
0zemp2c··on Googlers angry about CEO’s $226M pay after cuts in perks and 12,000 layoffs
> we have a career which requires a dedication to constant learning

95% of that is chasing dumb fads, pop cultures, pointless shiny objects, technology fetishes

0zemp2c··on Googlers angry about CEO’s $226M pay after cuts in perks and 12,000 layoffs
Googlers:

if you don't like how Google works, vote with your feet

you'll never own enough shares to get on the mic at an annual meeting, leaving is your only recourse

0zemp2c··on Europeans drain billions from banks, fed up with shrinking savings
> Besides, no safe is fireproof

lots of high-quality safes are more than capable of surviving a home fire

that doesn't mean paper stored inside is necessarily retrievable, but metal objects like gold or firearms would definitely be fine

0zemp2c··on Shopify will be smaller by about 20% and Flexport will buy Shopify Logistics
I think the Irish Farewell is even better, just close the browser and walk away, if you really like your coworkers, you can spare them the uncomfortable conversation, and the Irish Farewell is a tiny way of polluting the culture of the thing that ejected you
0zemp2c··on Shopify will be smaller by about 20% and Flexport will buy Shopify Logistics
doom and gloom? all major indexes are still trading at lofty values

"safety" stocks like AAPL are at or near all-time highs

real estate has budged slightly, but a rounding error off of the gains made in the last few years

even employment...tech hiring is getting hit but lots of other employers in retail, food & beverage are reporting record hiring and even wage increases

if there is a "crash", it hasn't happened yet

you may just end up with a sucky decade of stagflation...you are poorer every day, but just not dramatically so

0zemp2c··on Google, Microsoft CEOs Called to AI Meeting at White House
> it’s that fact kids are learning what they want really want to any time they want online

they've been able to do that for years already...and the most tech-forward part of the US - California - is showing worse outcomes in education every year

AI "automated education" will be thrown at poor people as a "solution"...the rich will continue to favor small classrooms, good teachers, low/no tech

absolutely I would favor someone learning in the "Amish" style over someone drooling over an iPad...

0zemp2c··on I used System76’s Pangolin for weeks, and Linux was not the biggest problem
System76 hardware has never been impressive, all of these faults also manifest if you run Windows on the same hardware.

System76 has mostly existed to provide a safe solution for people who are freaked out about taking the risk of installing Linux on existing laptops.

0zemp2c··on Canadian province experiments with decriminalising hard drugs
stuff like this really makes you wonder if "crazy" conspiracy theories like Cultural Marxism, which sane people tell me doesn't exist, actually have merit

I mean...if you really want to utterly destroy the fabric of society and force normal people to surrender all power to government...this would be a fantastic strategy. Pretty much every "revolutionary" guide from Bakunin to present day embraces the idea that you have to make things bad enough so they break beyond repair, and in the resulting chaos, you impose your new order....

0zemp2c··on FBI Bureau Supervisor Arrested in Connection with Jan 6th Capitol Riot
America's democracy was subverted loooong ago, its called Wall Street...they figured it out - when you write the laws, you don't need to worry about breaking the law

but keep thinking you are standing guard arresting some rednecks

keep your credit score up! compliance is important

the system is so thoroughly subverted that yes, voting is a waste of time...its amusing to watch the lemmings put the little "I Voted!!" sticker on their shirts like it matters...

0zemp2c··on America will soon see a wave of bank mergers?
yes, and now they are "attacking" PacWest, whose stock is plummeting like First Republic

its an easy cycle - find a bank you want for nothing, feed bad press through the usual outlets, watch it fall, then watch depositors get spooked, then buy it for nothing

First Republic is probably just one of many banks intended to be undermined, trashed, and then sold for nothing

and remember all the times First Republic's CEO came out and defended his business as it was collapsing? me neither...makes you wonder...

0zemp2c··on America will soon see a wave of bank mergers?
this is how the Apple bank accounts can work

Apple makes money selling phones, not mortgages

the funds deposited can be reinvested in Apple stock

as long as Apple is not loaning at interest, they could pull it off

I think people are underestimating the blast radius of these accounts...imagine an entity engaged in "fair" banking (and only banking) that is too big and powerful to be undermined by JPM, BofA etc

0zemp2c··on America will soon see a wave of bank mergers?
those loans are being repaid

with votes

Democrats dangled loan forgiveness at the midterms, bought enough votes to blunt a Republican trouncing...never followed through to reward the voters but no worries, the promise can be re-made for the Presidential election

all Biden has to do is offer full loan forgiveness and the election is his

DeSantis will counter with auto loan forgiveness (just as big of a problem now), and it will be a battle to see who can buy more votes

0zemp2c··on Bitcoin Climbs as US Bank Failure Bolsters Crypto Narrative
banks are being selected for termination

cryptocurrencies can be selected for termination

its easy: Congress passes a law making it illegal to complete any binding and enforceable contract with cryptocurrency
