0xfedcafe··on US strikes $1.2B deal to pay German firm to halt offshore wind projects
They still mostly rely on coal. Slightly more than half of electricity is generated by burning coal, whereas in the US, it's only 15%. The renewable energy share in generation is roughly the same in the US and China, but not for capacity.
0xfedcafe··on US strikes $1.2B deal to pay German firm to halt offshore wind projects
"RWE said that it will now reinvest the sum into conventional gas projects, including $900m (£669m) in a liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminal project in Louisiana."

"Trump has sought to boost government support for fossil fuels after campaigning for the presidency under the slogan "drill, baby, drill"."

That's insane, even though half of Republican supporters believe in climate change, and almost all Democratic voters do too. I can understand cutting government spending on the transition to green energy when projects are unprofitable, but what is the point of cutting it for profitable ones? If I'm not mistaken, energy firms like RWE are even threatened with lawsuits if they continue building wind turbines. Other coal investments are even more insane.

Here comes the European freedom and free speech. With Chat Control it’s even more hilarious. Compliance list, another European Commission, as always.

Funny how even safe Rust isn’t able to stop vibecoding without a proper validation. And the fact that it's a monopoly isn't so funny anymore.
0xfedcafe··on Intel Announces Inference-Optimized Xe3P Graphics Card with 160GB VRAM
OpenVino is entirely open-source and can run PyTorch and ONNX models, so this is definitely not a topic of concern. PyTorch also has native Intel GPU support https://docs.pytorch.org/docs/stable/notes/get_start_xpu.htm...

0xfedcafe··on SystemD Service Hardening
Yeah. With OpenRC or runit, the idea is you just layer the security on yourself since the base is so minimal. Honestly, the best place to start for any system is Madaidan’s Linux Hardening Guide. It’s super thorough and works for pretty much anything. From there, you can add other tools. The Gentoo Hardened setup with SELinux is an option, but it’s a ton of work. AppArmor is way easier for just locking down specific services and apps, it’s what Alpine uses and it’s pretty effective. And for sandboxing random apps, Firejail is perfect. You can just wrap it around your browser or anything else you don’t fully trust to keep it contained. Gives you a lot of control.

0xfedcafe··on SUSE launches new European digital sovereignty service to meet surging demand
This is really good news. Europe has kept saying that digital sovereignty is a must, but for some reason, they have primarily considered US-based projects like Fedora and almost never SUSE. This has always made me wonder, because SUSE already has almost all the necessary tools; for example, Rancher and openSUSE and they're well known in Europe for quite a while.
0xfedcafe··on High Performance Image Sensor Processing Using FPGAs [pdf]
what do you mean? in image processing or in general? in general they're used a lot where performance is important, especially in high frequency trading, crypto-mining, etc. also they're quite important for image processing in defence/medical imaging.

Pale Fire sounds awful and lacks any flair. That's exactly what an ordinary programmer with no taste would name their work.
0xfedcafe··on The illusion of being stuck
I fully agree with this article, based on my experience, which I achieved purely empirically.

I was stuck for a long time and couldn't do new, challenging things for myself; it felt almost impossible. The solution was to get more and more challenges in life. This happened almost accidentally, but a lot has changed. After all the discomfort that occurred bit by bit, it has become much easier to do something new. Even if it feels disgusting and you want to shout, the only solution is to just do it.

Also, building new habits helps a lot because it takes at least several weeks, so you have to accept this challenge and do it.
