code monkey in central Massachusetts. 3 years out of college, disillusioned with the reality of spending the next 40 years in a cubicle, and still looking for inspiration on what I'd rather do instead. Something inbetween saving the world or conquering it, probably.

Guess it's time to add a regex block feature to gaim. (block .*Coho)?
0xdefec8··on Mozilla Ubiquity: a ridiculously useful Firefox extension
Very cool. I love how some software is approaching the point of almost transcending the UI. If you combined something like Ubiquity with voice recognition I think you'd basically have a real version of 60s campy sci-fi tech: "computer, cross reference joker's last known whereabouts with..."
0xdefec8··on Pipl.com: people search so good it will scare your pants off
The PDF results are sort of cool, but it seems like just another meta-search engine to me.
0xdefec8··on Remember "This is your brain on drugs"?: Teaching teenagers about texting harassment
I can sleep better at night now that teens are safe from mean spirited text messages. There's so much evil in this world.
0xdefec8··on How not to log a Bugzilla Ticket (or ask for help on an open source project)
Did anyone else get the feeling that it took 2 years of porting Bugzilla to Java for the OP to figure out you don't need to install Perl to view a website?

I wish this guy a lot of luck. Whether he has a chance or not, I respect him immensely for not "standing on the sidelines".

The story really hits close to him for me because I have one of the disorders they narrowed out for the poor girl. Like it said, 90% of the battle for surviving some of these is just knowing what you have. It's an overwhelming feeling of frustration and helplessness to have your life 100% at the mercy of a dysfunctional healthcare system. At the risk of using a gratuitous nerd metaphor, this guy's writing his own OS instead of using Windows.

Because there's no loss or no gain when you fold preflop and you don't even see cards, so it's more like abstaining completely? I don't know, I see your point though, the metaphor was stretched a bit far.

It's not playing at all.
0xdefec8··on Detailed How-To From Banned Digger
Sounds a lot like politics. Just with more hotpockets and wizard capes.
0xdefec8··on What Easter Eggs have you placed in code?
I believe you can still set your language preferences in Google to "bork bork bork". An homage?

I'm surprised how easily people equate "duplication of the mind" with "immortality". I'm agnostic when it comes to god, and I'm agnostic about that piece of the singularity. Maybe someday we'll have enough knowledge of the mind and reality to know for sure that "the self" really is just a bunch of organic bits in the ol' noggin, but anyone claiming to know that answer right now is too presumptuous.
0xdefec8··on My Public Apology
meh. You had time to think about your op and already made a reply basically repeating the original sentiment. You clearly don't feel any differently about the op, and maybe that's not such a bad thing.

But this just reeks of Jimmy Swaggart or Michael Richards. (On the bright side, you've successfully pushed the hivemind to the opposing view, although I don't think that was your goal)

0xdefec8··on 5 Reasons Why I Want Digg for Girls
Forget girls; Digg ostracizes anyone who isn't a Male-Liberal-American-ObamaSupporting-AppleLoving-WebDesigner.

>I plan to try to organize counterpressure while in Peru this November.

All I can picture are some very confused little Peruvian children wondering why the large scary bearded man is yelling about computadora libre.

"Initially it was a zine started in 1988 by Mark Frauenfelder and Carla Sinclair, then in 1995 it became a website, and in 2000 it became a blog."

heh I wonder if the site ever changed or just the buzzwords

I'm a Mac user. However, those commercials are the first ad campaign so insufferable that I almost wanted to return my product after I bought it out of spite.

I feel like their advertising actually makes it tougher for a nerd like myself to convert to the cult of Mac. It's Unix with an unbelievable GUI, what else could a nerd want? But I still take shit from friends and coworkers who think I bought it so I can put on my ironic Castro hat and head out to Starbucks where I'll listen to Decemberist mp3s and blog for p.e.t.a.

0xdefec8··on Ask: where to find a part time programming job?
Ah. Is being a condescending prick your primary tenet? Maybe I should be taking notes...
0xdefec8··on Ask: where to find a part time programming job?
I figured it was some sort of karmic meta-solution to my problem :)
0xdefec8··on What a load of old rubbish: MMOs. They're doing it wrong.
Ignoring gameplay issues, I think another interesting feature of procedural game dev is the memory/CPU tradeoff.

For example the 97,280 byte FPS: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.kkrieger

0xdefec8··on Get that job at Google
"For God's sake, don't try sorting a linked list during the interview."

Could someone explain that one to me? It's probably a sign I need to hit the books.
