0xdada··on The Oracle of Bacon: Thirty Years Later
Ah, Akinator!
0xdada··on How do the pros get someone to leave a cult?
I don't really try with family Fidesz members (Hungarian MAGA). I know why my relative believes what he does and I can't change that. I'm there for him as a friend, will share my conflicting views carefully but avoid getting dragged into a full on argument with emotions.
0xdada··on Show HN: I built a synth for my daughter
Wow! Looks great and very inspiring. Great idea to make separate components that can be connected - something like a drum machine, sequencer, maybe even a chord synthesizer? It can be constrained such that you are always diatonic, you could have a mode knob too.

Jamming with other people can be a life changing experience, and to do that as a child would be a great privilege to have.

0xdada··on Tips for stroke-surviving software engineers
I managed to wake up in my early 30s, by watching my parents' health slowly start failing starting in their 50s.
0xdada··on EQ: A video about all forms of equalizers
I have watched 10+ hours of lessons on compressors and I still don't hear it. I understand most concepts but don't use much compression besides side-chaining and the built-in Ableton glue compression.
0xdada··on Noise cancelling a fan
How would this work without headphones in a room? I'm guessing the noise would actually be amplified in some parts of the room.
0xdada··on US High school students' scores fall in reading and math
Why is that a bad thing? Choosing to be bored instead of mindlessly scrolling is great. Boredom was an important part of growing up for me.
0xdada··on Tomorrow's emoji today: Unicode 17.0
A while back I made a small browser game using emoji for all graphics. I was delighted to see so many different sets of emoji in screenshots people posted.
0xdada··on Genomic study: our capacity for language emerged at least 135k years ago
But hearing and sound making both have many other uses. Jellyfish can "hear", crickets can make noises. I'm guessing we had both of these long before language.
0xdada··on Nintendo announces the Switch 2 [video]
Looks like the sliding controllers bit means that they will work like a computer mouse.
0xdada··on Google took three months to remove scam app that stole over $5M
There is a cost to breaking captcha.
0xdada··on Conway's Game of Life, in checkboxes for some reason
Love the use of light blue color for the blinking cells! Surprisingly smooth UX considering we have checkboxes for cells.
0xdada··on Kraken claims it is being 'extorted' as hacker demands reward after $3M theft
And you have a scam tweet immediately below this one.
0xdada··on Ask HN: What was an interesting project you started and finished over a weekend?
2 days later, I just finished it. I'm finally free. Let this be a warning to future readers.
0xdada··on British Placename Mapper
I wouldn't be surprised if that's also via Scandinavian influence (kyrke). Some other examples are bra, barn, hus.
0xdada··on Pilot study shows ketogenic diet improves mental illness
Any overweight person. I gained 10% of my bodyweight in the last 6 months and I haven't felt better. (Mostly eating plants though.)
0xdada··on Show HN: Audio plugin for circuit-bent MP3 compression sounds
Quoting Brian Eno: "Whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature. CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided. It’s the sound of failure: so much modern art is the sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart"
0xdada··on Wired has removed "How Google alters search queries" story
This happened to me yesterday, I don't remember the query but I remember I was quite surprised because it never happens. Turns out I misspelled a brand/product name by one letter - Funny enough, I would have wanted them to correct my query in this case.
0xdada··on Unrelated Words Puzzle
also, bank and note are only 15% related
0xdada··on Facebook Announces Meta Verified
Not for me, personally. FB without ads still has no interesting content for me. YouTube premium is the best value for my money out of all my subscriptions due to content.

On Facebook the network effect that made it cool in the beginning has now died and it will keep it from ever coming back for the same reasons it was great in the beginning. I'm very confident people I really care about will not start posting there, and they probably have the same thought process. It's just uncool.

0xdada··on P5.js – A library to make coding accessible for artists, designers, educators
There are libraries (i.e. https://github.com/zenozeng/p5.js-svg) that give you a SVG runtime. I find it very useful!
0xdada··on Programming on 34 Keys
jesusfreke has a 3d printed version of this on github: https://github.com/JesusFreke/lalboard
0xdada··on Haribo Goldbears, the world’s first gummy bears
The halal haribo I had last week had beef based gelatin in it, instead of pork (I guess), so this one at least was not vegetarian.
0xdada··on World military expenditure passes $2T for first time
There have been 14 cases of (political) self-immolation in the 2020s so far:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_political_self-immolat...

0xdada··on Show HN: A new daily word puzzle
I got 261 points.

Spoiler: QkFCRUwgUEFETE9DSyBSSEVUT1JJQw==

0xdada··on [dead]
This one has the correct colors as well.
0xdada··on “Coding is basically just ifs and for loops.”
coding is just ifs and for loops, computer science is just types, (to me) software engineering is a mix of those two
0xdada··on Sunlight affects whether languages have a word for ‘blue’
I had to go and dig up this old HN comment (and the radiolab episode it references): https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11580007.
0xdada··on NFT projects are just MLMs for tech elites
I'm an amateur generative artist who just started minting on hic et nunc a month ago. I'm extremely sceptical and even disgusted by the big money NFTs, but minting and collecting on H=N has been a lot of fun, there is a very nice community as well.

Selling my art for ~real money for the first time has been such a motivating experience, even knowing that we are in a strong mania phase now. So I can say that I care too!

One thing to note is that hic et nunc is ran by one guy who doesn't really like to communicate and doesn't believe in paying for stuff like devops work, so I'm not sure if this will be the one site to survive on tezos. The community will eventually decide over time.

0xdada··on The historical accuracy of medieval city-builder video games
> Medieval villagers were often living on the edge of subsistence. Agricultural surpluses were skimmed by the church and the feudal lords. Bad harvests, banditry, warfare and disease might decimate a village community at any time.

Dwarf Fortress has shown that this would in fact be quite exciting, but it would probably be a lot more niche.
