0xb100db1ade··on Show HN: Simulation-based high school physics course notes
Used this to get a perfect score on SAT Physics. Thank you, Landgreen!
0xb100db1ade··on Lesspass – open-source stateless password manager
So? If someone can steal the hash, they could probably hijack the session anyway.

> Leaving fobs in the car more often

OTOH, it's much harder to leave a key in the car when you never have to take it out of your pocket in the first place.

0xb100db1ade··on Signal is finally bringing its secure messaging to the masses
Nope. Once you sync your cryptographic keys with your desktop application, the phone is no longer needed.

WhatsApp sends messages through the phone. Signal Desktop does not.

> If you are focused on better controls, our work may be complementary.

This is exactly what I'm doing!

> Would you like to join forces on a high quality fork? A few things concern me with tmux currently.

I would absolutely love to work together. Please contact the email in my github profile (@aaronjanse).

I'd be happy to state my feelings on each of those issues, but it seems like you have done more research than I have.

Would you mind including some of your thoughts in the email you send me?

0xb100db1ade··on Eternal Terminal
I don't have zsh setup on the OS I'm running currently, but a simple example is that the light-grey autocomplete text from zsh/oh-my-zsh shows up on i3-tmux but not tmux (at least at the time of writing).

I honestly don't remember the exact details, and maybe it's now fixed.

> Been waiting for a good replacement for tmux to come along for a while now that isn't just i3 > Does anyone else have a love hate relationship with tmux? > I hate its scrolling and buffer behavior, its almost impossible to get right.

I wasn't planning on sharing my project on HN until I've written up more documentation, but I'm actually working on exactly this problem.

https://github.com/aaronjanse/i3-tmux

So far I've got i3-like controls, resizing & scrolling terminal splits with the mouse, and better color support than tmux.

My current roadblock has been lack of motivation, but if *anyone& on HN finds this interesting (or even just files a bug report), I'd be motivated to reignite my work on the project.

0xb100db1ade··on An erroneous paper on religion and generosity is retracted
I see where you're coming from, but would the subjects be comfortable with all their data becoming public?
0xb100db1ade··on Show HN: Cordless, a Discord terminal client written in Go
Cordless is awesome!

I've been using it for the past few weeks due to a problem with the Discord electron client spinning up my fans. Using Discord in the terminal fixes the problem (and scores major geek points!)

The main developer of Cordless is super nice. Each issue I've filed has been an absolute pleasure to discuss.

0xb100db1ade··on Factoring may be easier than we think (2016)
> current factoring algorithms would require enough energy to boil all oceans on the earth, that's a lot even compared to the US's energy supply.

Interesting. For what algorithm & key size?

I'd love to quote this. I've heard it before but I don't remember the source.

0xb100db1ade··on South Korean government to switch to Linux: ministry
Did you mean to say that about North Korea, not South Korea?
0xb100db1ade··on Google Is Eating Our Mail
I've never gotten spam nor have my ProtonMail emails marked as spam. Lucky me
0xb100db1ade··on Lemmy: Federated Alternative to Reddit in Rust

Is that any different from a regular website?

0xb100db1ade··on How long do neutrons live? Physicists close in on decades-old puzzle
Correct. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_tunnelling
0xb100db1ade··on Mastodon and Keybase
I do, to some extent agree.

I think the idea is that privacy != anonymity. Signal provides the former, but not the latter.

It's tough. I think that usernames could become messy, but I also think it'd be amazing to anonymously tip a news reporter via Signal, but at the same time the latter would not be as safe as Tor etc.

0xb100db1ade··on Mastodon and Keybase
I wish that Keybase could work with the Signal team on something.

Signal has a lot of experience in UI [1] and security, and Keybase had the identity proofs. I'd love to see them work together rather than compete.

[1] Signal UI used to be horrible but as of the past few months it's improved a ton! It's now my preferred SMS client.

0xb100db1ade··on IPFS Project Roadmap
I love the idea of IPFS, but I can't think of a use case not covered by torrents.

Would someone mind enlightening me regarding what sets IPFS apart from torrents?

0xb100db1ade··on The Nature of Code – evolutionary and emergent properties of nature in code
This book got me interested in physics and AI.

A full, pleasurable year of my programming life was inspired by this book. And what I learned from the physics part of the book made high school physics a piece of cake.

Thank you, Daniel Shiffman

0xb100db1ade··on A German court forced the removal of a Wikipedia article’s history
While a good idea, keep in mind that the article says Wikipedia only had one day to take action.
0xb100db1ade··on Making email more secure with MTA-STS standard

Did I read that correctly? PGP is popular in Germany?

If so, I'd love to hear more please!

0xb100db1ade··on New WebKit Features in Safari 12.1
Is nobody mentioning Dark Mode?

I think it's the most exciting feature!

Android Pie introduced a system light/dark mode that hopefully apps will integrate.

macOS is implementing system-wide light/dark mode.

I hope other browsers implement dark mode detection.

We are finally approaching my dream of a system wide light/dark toggle so I can use light in the day and dark during the night.

0xb100db1ade··on I’m a Tech Addict and I’m Not Ashamed
True, but what are we using technology right now, in the moment, to do? Communicate.

Rather than technology driving us away from being social, I think being social is driving us to technology.

There are many extremely niche communities that I'd be unable to be a part of if the Internet did not exist.

Has anyone gotten proper scaling working?

0xb100db1ade··on Linux Desktop Setup

0xb100db1ade··on Linux Problems on the Desktop (2018)
What I get out of this is that while each of these issues may be individually dismissed, they together make for a very "non-premium" experience.

I use linux myself, but when people I know try it out, they immediately leave after encountering problems with audio, dpi scaling, etc

0xb100db1ade··on Facebook to integrate the infrastructure for WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger
Correct. Key verification is done by looking at signatures on a given user's linked social networks / websites etc
