0xDEADFED5··on In Memoriam: John L. Young, Cryptome Co-Founder
oh wow, a true legend. RIP John.
0xDEADFED5··on A study of lightning fatalities inside buildings while using smartphones [pdf] (2024)
typically phone chargers aren't grounded, so probably not relevant? lightning travels through the ground, so i'd expect the ground wires to be rather dangerous. also, neutral is bonded to ground at the meter (at least here)... so also not good?
0xDEADFED5··on Reverse engineering the obfuscated TikTok VM
this is cool. i briefly worked on a TikTok bot a while back and it was a huge pain in the ass.
0xDEADFED5··on "We're building a new static type checker for Python"
i type hint for the poor bastards who have to use my code. it's a lot more pleasant to read and reason about.
0xDEADFED5··on DeepSeek's Hidden Bias: How We Cut It by 76% Without Performance Loss
i've been generating training data from different models to train a small personality sim NN for a game. all the different biases are interesting.

basically i present the LLM with a social situation, and ask it to take an action based on personality facets + relationship with target.

deepseek is super biased against violence. Llama 3.3 is totally okay with violence, but will never choose to "take no action", etc.

0xDEADFED5··on Supreme Court upholds TikTok ban, but Trump might offer lifeline
the fact that a person is closeted gay, or that location data revealed exactly when they were with a mistress
0xDEADFED5··on Shavarsh Karapetyan
right? i'd be kinda wary about hanging out with the guy =)
0xDEADFED5··on Kirin demos "electric salt spoon" at CES
I read about this the other day. The main thing I remember was the weird grip required...a fist grip? I'd be curious to hear more about that aspect...
0xDEADFED5··on Finland's zero homeless strategy (2021)
Most addicts end up recovering
0xDEADFED5··on Luigi Mangione's account has been renamed on Stack Overflow
Dirtbag move to keep his content but erase his name
0xDEADFED5··on My takeaways from 12 months of therapy
if you learn things from therapy that improve your life then i guess it has worked.

i imagine success stories tend to self-select as well. if you go to therapy in the first place it means you're admitting a need and willingness to change.

if a person thinks they know everything and can't benefit from therapy then they're probably unlikely to gain anything from the experience.

0xDEADFED5··on ASCII porn predates the Internet but it's still everywhere (2019)
check out my website:

https://terminoid.com/discover/

i still need to add seeking and stuff, but it works. like asciinema but based on xterm.js

0xDEADFED5··on FBI: Largest homemade explosives cache in agency history found in Virginia
so you also made a tennis ball rocket?
0xDEADFED5··on Dumping Memory to Bypass BitLocker on Windows 11
I know this is besides the point, but still kinda relevant:

Even on Win11 it's still possible to do the old utilman (or other suitable module) replacement hack from Windows repair (trigger by interrupting boot), from there you can change account passwords at will.

0xDEADFED5··on Guide to mechanical keyboards
A few fancy keyboards with magnetic switches (I'm using a SteelSeries one) let you set the activation distance. Maybe trying one and maxing out the activation distance would work for you?
0xDEADFED5··on The Swedish cabin on the frontline of a possible hybrid war
yes, but you have to pine for it
0xDEADFED5··on Making AMD GPUs competitive for LLM inference (2023)
Fwiw on 22.04 i can use current kernel but otherwise follow Intel's instructions and the stuff works (old as it is now). I'm currently trying to figure out the best way to finetune Qwen 2.5 3B, the old axolotl ain't up to it. Not sure if I'm gonna work on a fork of axolotl or try something else at this point.
0xDEADFED5··on Making AMD GPUs competitive for LLM inference (2023)
Big agree on Intel working on SYCL. I've millions of tasks thru SYCL llama.cpp at this point, and though SYCL reliably does 5-6x the prompt processing speed of the Vulkan builds, current Vulkan builds are now up to 50% faster at token generation than SYCL on my Intel GPU
0xDEADFED5··on Ask HN: Who's building on Python NoGIL?
Waiting for CFFI or pywin32 free-threaded support since I don't have time to work on CFFI myself
0xDEADFED5··on Documented and annotated source code for Elite on the Commodore 64
I've never owned a C64 or played Elite, but the dedication shown to your hobby is inspiring, thanks for the effort, it's very cool.
0xDEADFED5··on Two galaxies aligned in a way where their gravity acts as a compound lens
sheesh, everyone knows we'd just use the sun as an RF amplifier first
0xDEADFED5··on King Arthur's ancient trail across Britain
What's your favorite film or book on the topic?
0xDEADFED5··on State of Python 3.13 performance: Free-threading
Nice benchmarks. Hopefully some benevolent soul with more spare time than I can pitch in on threadsafe CFFI
0xDEADFED5··on Riot Games: Peeking into Valorant's Netcode (2020)
this has been debunked in these comments somewhere on here. people love their castle stairs on this site.
0xDEADFED5··on New Mersenne Prime discovered (probably)
y-cruncher is the king of stress testing
0xDEADFED5··on The Fastest Mutexes
Can I use PyMutex from my own Python code?
0xDEADFED5··on Ryujinx (Nintendo Switch emulator) has been removed from GitHub
I was there, this is true.
0xDEADFED5··on A high-performance, zero-overhead, extensible Python compiler using LLVM
javascript refugee?
0xDEADFED5··on Is My Blue Your Blue?
if we're sticking with this binary thing then you get another vote for green
0xDEADFED5··on Is My Blue Your Blue?
turquoise is green and i'll die on this hill
