0xAFFFF··on Trump announces 100% tariffs on movies ‘produced in foreign lands’
Trump has proven time and time again that he didn't understand soft power.
0xAFFFF··on New sociosexuality research could revolutionize how we think about casual sex
Who do we really want to trust? Long time grifters exploiting male insecurities and considering women as barely human, or professional researchers in their field of expertise? A mind-boggling question really.
0xAFFFF··on Companies with return-to-office mandates face losing their most valuable workers
It's perfectly fine to not enjoy WFH, the point of the article here is forcing an option onto employees instead of giving them the choice.
0xAFFFF··on Boeing faces new US investigation into 'missed' 787 inspections
It's not so bad yet because the aviation industry comes from a place of extremely high safety standards, but it could get worse pretty fast.
0xAFFFF··on Mass use of guided bombs driving Russian advances, says Ukraine
NATO directly fighting in Ukraine is a massive red line and a huge escalation that pretty much nobody wants.
0xAFFFF··on Paul Alexander, ‘the man in the iron lung’, has died
Reasonable precautions here were likely to be proper masking from visitors and adequate air filtering in the room. Not something too hard to expect from people visiting a sick person.
0xAFFFF··on France enshrines 'freedom' to abortion in Constitution, in world first
Don't forget women dying because legal (and safe) abortions are not available and they go the illegal and unsafe way.
0xAFFFF··on France enshrines 'freedom' to abortion in Constitution, in world first
Abortion rights is absolutely not a cultural issue import from the US. While recent development about abortion rights in the US have sparked concern about those rights in France, they've been an ongoing fight for decades.
0xAFFFF··on France enshrines 'freedom' to abortion in Constitution, in world first
Thanks for pointing this out. While this is a symbolic victory, this is not going to ensure French women have safe and affordable access to abortion, especially when Planned Parenthood faces funding problems and smear campaigns while practitioners can still exercise a conscience clause to deny abortion care.
0xAFFFF··on Show HN: I made a site that lets you punish yourself
Impressive feat to remove the gym part out of a gym membership.
0xAFFFF··on The failure of self-checkout technology
Uniqlo is using RFID too at least in France. Both work pretty well and the speed of checkout is unmatched. But this works for Uniqlo and Decathlon because they only sell their own products. Supermarkets come with more hurdles, as products don't typically have any tag attached and are also selling bulk.

I also suspect you need an average price per product that's too high for supermarkets to make it worth it.

0xAFFFF··on Cybertruck Is Already a Production Nightmare for Tesla
"Tesla to introduce new Model C made entirely out of grated cheese, a feat never even tried before. Ecstatic fans lauding a 'masterful gambit' from Musk"
0xAFFFF··on Cybertruck Is Already a Production Nightmare for Tesla
Comically large yet you can't fit a mountain bike in the trunk.
0xAFFFF··on Xbox will block third-party controllers to "preserve the console experience"
This. Serving cryptic error codes over issues that do have a proper wording is a big no.
0xAFFFF··on Social media platform X could go behind paywall
To be fair, and I'm not saying it lightly because I despise Elon Musk, his rationale for pushing Twitter Blue in the first place was to reduce reliance on advertising revenue, so it's definitely a thing in his mind, even if it's not the main driver for a paywall.
0xAFFFF··on Social media platform X could go behind paywall
That new product is unlikely to happen if VC or any kind of billionaire are involved. Heck, Bluesky actually taking off a bit is an accident.
0xAFFFF··on OSS Game Engines are increasing their stars on GitHub due to Unity's missteps
I don't think that people realistically oppose monetization going up. The main complaint is adding retroactively a new form of monetization with a unverifiable metric that is not bound to revenue.

Sure people wouldn't have been happy with higher fees, but current clusterfuck is an order of magnitude worse.

0xAFFFF··on Ryanair says air traffic failure is not acceptable
"Notorious tax dodger complains about public service not being reliable enough"
0xAFFFF··on Removed as moderator of /r/Celebrities after over 14 years
Good moderation is mostly invisible. Nonexistent or poor moderation becomes obvious very quickly.
0xAFFFF··on Digg's v4 launch: an optimism born of necessity (2018)
Considering the context, most people were probably overloaded with work and a lot of changes must have been made with little to no oversight.
0xAFFFF··on Most Bitcoin Inscriptions belong to a single person
That's funny because bitcoiners can't shut the fuck up about Visa whenever the abysmal throughput of the bitcoin network or its humongous power consumption is brought up.
0xAFFFF··on Virtual Threads Arrive in JDK 21, Ushering a New Era of Concurrency
Where I am it's hard to find quality people period. If anything targeting Kotlin or Scala developers usually yields slightly better developers but also further restricts an already small candidate pool.
0xAFFFF··on Virtual Threads Arrive in JDK 21, Ushering a New Era of Concurrency
I you really want to stick to terrible naming and overused architectural principles in 2023 that's your choice but that's hardly a Java issue.
0xAFFFF··on Paris votes to ban rental e-scooters
Note that this only applies to e-scooters operators: their licence won't be renewed. Privately owned e-scooters are still legal and allowed.

The irony is there has been a lot of efforts from the mayor and operators to regulate the e-scooters: licensing to a limited group of operators (3 afaik, instead of virtually every operator under the sun deploying scooters), designated parking spots, better communication of rules to the users, automatic speed limits in walking areas.

As a parisian that mostly walks and uses public transportation, most of my gripes with those services have been addressed by the aforementioned measures, but I guess that the early deployment chaos pissed off enough people to have them voted out.

0xAFFFF··on Teen-age fentanyl deaths in a Texas county
0 idea what to do? Switzerland [1] has implemented a successful strategy that revolves around one key point: treating the drug problem as healthcare instead of criminality. The "War on Drugs" is the most ineffective strategy when it comes to dealing with addiction.

0xAFFFF··on Inconvenient EU piracy study kept hidden for years (2017)
Living off record sales was never an option for the vast majority of musicians either.
0xAFFFF··on A Lost Hiker’s SOS Signal Sparked a Wildfire. Now He Must Pay $300k
I don't really think that kind of deferred deterrent works against stupid or desperate. The guy decided to burn a whole tree. In an arid setting.
0xAFFFF··on Nicola Sturgeon to resign as Scotland's first minister
How so?
0xAFFFF··on GoDaddy Announces Layoffs of “About 8%”
> Really? You think any employer “cares about their employees”?

It can actually happen sometimes, but I've never seen it outside of small structures.

0xAFFFF··on MrBeast: Why has YouTuber faced criticism for blind surgery video?
Two things can be true at the same time:

- I'd rather be in a world where an internet celebrity cured blindness in 1000 people than a world where they did nothing.

- I'd rather be in a world where having your vision fixed didn't depend on charity, which is a deeply flawed and unethical way to fight inequality.
