I'm not saying it's a character flaw. I'm saying they held onto a job that wasn't optimal based on their other available options. They could have been middle class had they chosen another job. Down right negligent honestly since they clearly had no healthcare that entire time. One illness could have thrown them on the street.

I feel the same way as the author but I work with php. Recently it's all been TDD, statically typed, and JavaScript gets web packed into one or two files so instead of juggling 15 script tags I only have one or two and a style tag for css. With CI this all happens in the background on every commit.

What you pay for when you hire a dev like me with 17 years of experience in the field is the ability to know which libraries are the best to use and which techniques are worth using in the process.

0x0nyandesu··on The timing of evolutionary transitions suggests intelligent life is rare
It's possible that absent coal, oil, or natural gas we would have leap frogged directly into solar power first with directed mirrors powering a liquid turbine, wind, and eventually conventional solar panels made from silicone.

There's really no reason to use fossil fuels. The fact that we do actually let's us waste a ton of it. If we had to ration it to the bare essentials we'd be able to get away with using only 5% of the energy we currently use. Our current solar energy production in the United States is 2% but that 2% would have been more than enough to power the entire country in the 1920s.

It's a weird assumption that something like a Trex would even bother with a scrawny human with barely any meat on it when there's much more meat to be had from other dinos.
0x0nyandesu··on My parents collect cans for a living
For whatever reason HN nerds love stories about recycling even though this family is clearly poor and not making good financial decisions.
0x0nyandesu··on My parents collect cans for a living
This is honestly sad, pathetic, and nothing to be proud of. There's no chance at moving up doing this line of work and depends entirely on the state continuing a recycling program that pays less and less as inflation rises. You put yourself at risk by competing with homeless for these cans. Any time you're not working you lose out on profit and that can happen just from getting sick or injured.

There's so many better jobs out there. My own immigrant parents started from doing service jobs in the food industry, driving, and kitchen work. They ended up doing all sorts of other jobs over the years but now own four properties with two fully paid off. This article isn't a success story, it's a story of failure.

0x0nyandesu··on Fine for violating Congressional Stock Act is $200 [pdf]
Didn't know that owning stock makes you selfish but k.
0x0nyandesu··on Fine for violating Congressional Stock Act is $200 [pdf]
I really don't understand why this is the hill everyone wants to die on about Congress. We want smart people in politics yet with the current zeitgeist I'd never in a million years recommend politics for a young person. And that's why we get only extremists and crazy folks running for office.

The sense comes from that part of growing up when you come to the realization that it happens whether you want it to or not so not participating and acting holier than thou about it just makes you a sucker.
0x0nyandesu··on Netflix Executive Sentenced to 30 Months for 700K Bribes, Kickbacks from Vendors
Nah it's just a howto manual on not getting caught.
0x0nyandesu··on Netflix Executive Sentenced to 30 Months for 700K Bribes, Kickbacks from Vendors
The student is being defrauded. They signed up for something that was supposed to cost x but instead it costs y. Their degree being in jeopardy makes it blackmail from my perspective.

It's telling that you were more willing to make sure the university wasn't being defrauded but I guess the student can kick rocks right?

0x0nyandesu··on Netflix Executive Sentenced to 30 Months for 700K Bribes, Kickbacks from Vendors
The average executive in a high money industry like film is clearing a lot more than that and is looking for any and all advantages that come from the position. It can come in any form from having a company car to getting an executive producer credit on some show they actually didn't produce. You're naive if you actually think this doesn't happen everyday in the film industry / culture. That's just business and it's part of the free market. I don't see how any of this is any business of the feds.

You mean like forcing kids to buy brand new books so that they can get a code to use to take tests on an online platform that the professor gets kickbacks from that has nothing to do with the university the kid is attending?
0x0nyandesu··on Netflix Executive Sentenced to 30 Months for 700K Bribes, Kickbacks from Vendors
I love how it's totally legal for the governor of Florida to send lucrative drug testing contracts to his wife's owned company but a guy getting a few stock options from a client is illegal.

I guess we'll just go back to big wads of cash in an envelope instead.

0x0nyandesu··on Netflix Executive Sentenced to 30 Months for 700K Bribes, Kickbacks from Vendors
Why is this even illegal? Perks in the industry is normal. People are always trying to get their own businesses front and center for contracts. Some of these companies just don't have much to give out other than equity and what exactly is wrong about that?
0x0nyandesu··on Ask HN: So who else is getting a pay cut this year?
Just moved from Philly to Cali. I regret not doing it 10 years ago. Already have an offer 50% above what I made in Philly. The funny part is my W2 withholding went down!

Philly taxes you so much and you get nothing for it.

0x0nyandesu··on Ask HN: So who else is getting a pay cut this year?
Lol some of us had remote before covid. Shocking I know.
0x0nyandesu··on Reddit files to go public
This but also don't use any email previously associated with any account cause they will go and blacklist your new IP too.
0x0nyandesu··on Reddit files to go public
It's just a small amount of actual content in the space compared to the old interface (still up at old.reddit.com)
0x0nyandesu··on Reddit files to go public
If they get rid of old.reddit.com I won't be able to use it..just can't. It will die for me like digg.

I'm one of those people and I'm still scratching my head at this statement.
0x0nyandesu··on Americans are rethinking where they want to live
I've lived in a major us east coast city up until the pandemic. My tax dollars kept going down the drain dealing with homeless who by in large were not originally city residents. Your opinion that these people were enticed to the city is wholly unfounded and totally made up. Just another reason I've mentally checked out of the debate. Y'all have fun with that. I'll live in the burbs.
0x0nyandesu··on Americans are rethinking where they want to live
Ah yes blame the "city" and not the various municipalities sending their homeless to said city. Most of the homeless are not from the cities they are in. They just end up there and then the city has to pay for it for some reason.
0x0nyandesu··on Americans are rethinking where they want to live
The other 29% need to be sent to a re-education camp until they want to be part of society again. I'm not kidding. Vagrancy is a plague on civil society.
0x0nyandesu··on Americans are rethinking where they want to live
If people on HN really want the urban life style to make any sense in America they need to start tackling the mental health / homeless problem.

They talk about "the environment" but no one wants to talk about how my wife has to dodge human feces getting on and off public transportation.

"It's just part of living in a vibrant city".... Give me a break.

0x0nyandesu··on Americans are rethinking where they want to live
Who cares. Fuck the city. Never again.
0x0nyandesu··on Former BuzzFeed employees missed their big payday
These employee shareholders are all whales for this given stock so if they all sell at once not one of them would get the same price. They'd all tank it for each other. They are far better off waiting for a random Tuesday 2 years from now so that the market can absorb it.

As far as buzzfeed not being Facebook so what? Stocks these days are more marketing than anything else.

0x0nyandesu··on Former BuzzFeed employees missed their big payday
It honestly comes off as short sighted from the equity holder perspective. FB also dropped on it's first trading day but look at it now. Most of these people would be better off hodling for a few years.
0x0nyandesu··on Amazon Facility Hit by Tornado
I voted for Biden but [semi conservative opinion].
0x0nyandesu··on Amazon Facility Hit by Tornado
This is a great example of why I'm really starting to hate the internet. You can't express any opinion these days without a few paragraphs with your life story explaining why you're allowed to have such an opinion. (For example having to be Jewish to say anything critical about Israel)
