What about plumbing and water resistance to humidity in the bathroom?

0df8dkdfon Show HN: Easy cloud instance comparison (AWS, GCP, Azure, IBM, Alibaba and more)

Great tool. Would be good to also include other services like: advania, linode, Hertznet. Often these are cheaper and have more RAM, some even offer DDoS attack. (AWS costs about $6000 from their DDoS team).

0df8dkdfon Google’s copying of the Java SE API was fair use [pdf]

Not a lawyer, seems like this case will hold precedence then. The whole idea of copy righting an API is insane.

0df8dkdfon How to bypass Cloudflare bot protection

> You're often required to complete 5-10 captchas, and sometimes even after that, you get denied. Had that happen to me multiple times.

Glad you mentioned it. This also has happened to me many time. It is unfortunate botnet and spam has give IP addresses bad names.

0df8dkdfon Apple doesn't care about album cover art

This is what happens when a charismatic leader of a tech company dies (2012). Who ever is running the company doesn't have the essence of what created iPod. Just mass consumerism now.

0df8dkdfon Yank: Yank Terminal Output to Clipboard

also VIM. It is probably that. I guess he could have call it Put. But yank sounds cooler.

0df8dkdfon EU experts to say nuclear power qualifies for green investment label: document

Just wonder can we just send the nuclear wast to the sun, wouldn't that be a good way to get ride of them?

0df8dkdfon China boycotts Western clothes brands over Xinjiang cotton

This is interesting, cause China has just become Europe's num 1 trading partner. Seems just like another US/China trade war escalating.

0df8dkdfon Open Source Security Foundation

yeah, this starting to sound a bit like US Chamber of Commerce. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Chamber_of_Comme...

The name makes it sound like a US gov organisation, in reality it is a lobbying group to curb consumer rights.

0df8dkdfon Why use old computers and operating systems?

> Quite literally, the only way to use HyperCard is to get a hold of an old Mac – or emulate it, but emulation always falls short of the real deal. That’s why HyperCard alone is a pretty clear reason to use Mac OS 9

Not to mention Beautiful Doreena! Misses Mac OS pre X.

0df8dkdfon Why use old computers and operating systems?

0df8dkdfon Click

this sites are the exact reason why I browse without JS by default. There is no business a site should know how many previous web site I have visited as well as my CPU. All these JS API ought to be able to disabled by default.

0df8dkdfon WhatsApp CEO on the controversy surrounding proposed German communications laws

Not sure if we can trust anything coming from FB or Google type of large corp under US national security surveillance capitalism state (with conflicting business model against user privacy) regarding what they really do with user data. Any corporation with association with the intelligence agency and the military industrial complex can not be trust.

0df8dkdfon Repealing Section 230 won’t do what anyone wants

Excellent book! Made a good case that realize that Internet too was designed to centralize control. As long as the few controls the Internet infrastructure and the space satellite lane, it is NOT FREE.

0df8dkdfon Users are losing out against Big Sur’s sealed System

Thanks, is there a group where we can join? Maybe a web site would be great. Please post a link or PM me if you know. It relates to both personal and professional usage of MacOS.

0df8dkdfon Users are losing out against Big Sur’s sealed System

>Big Sur has been out for 3 months now and the company I work for, like many others, has a blanket ban on upgrading to it because of mountains of compatibility problems with mission-critical software.

I have being a Mac user since Apple II. All these changes really saddens me. Can we start some kind group similar to class action law suit to pressure Apple into changing this kind of behaviour in Big Sur. If not enough people upgrade, maybe they will have skip a version and come out with something more light weight. I think that happened with Snow Leopard ( don't remember the exact one).

0df8dkdfon In Defense of Myers Briggs (2020)

* In truth, people's personalities are malleable *

Thank you for saying that. There was an interview before Carl Jung passed away, where even he talked about how in certain situation where arch type changes. We all ought to view tests like Myer Briggs as a way to shade light on people and their ways of being.

0df8dkdfon 1991's PC technology was unbelievable (2011)

word perfect for me!

0df8dkdfon Fake_contacts: Android app to create fake phone contacts, to do data-poisoning

That is why we should have a custom app for contacts with custom encryption (like keepass) to store our real contact. So not any app or apple or google has access them.

For some ppl like political of activist fundraisers, contact info privacy are utter most important. In fact some of them still store it on rolodex, and will not put any of that into digital form. And as a software developer I actually support that tremendously.

0df8dkdfon Google Cloud vs. AWS Onboarding Comparison

Route 53, S3 storage, load balancer, everything is encouraged to work other AWS services! Smells much like what MS was doing. Don't get me wrong, it is more open than Google Cloud and Azura.

0df8dkdfon Google Cloud vs. AWS Onboarding Comparison

Google Cloud, AWS, MS Auzra are made to lock you into their system. I guess if fine if you are ok with it and you don't have an experienced systemadmin/dev op on hand.

There are plenty of cloud agnostic platform out there that does VPS, load balancers. digital ocean, linode, etc.

If you want to be green there is also the Advania they use geothermal energy. And since it is in iceland better data protection policy than US companies.

I'm not affiliated with any one of them, it is just from year of cloud provider hopping.

0df8dkdfon Find a person's profile across 350 social media sites

It is projects like this makes people dont' want to be on any public social media. It is creepy.

0df8dkdfon No support Linux hosting shutting down from hack

0df8dkdfon GitHub Should Start an App Store

For sure, the same way Linux is only the kernel. If you ask Stallman, he will say GNU/Linux. ;-)

0df8dkdfon GitHub Should Start an App Store

Hmmm the main issue is not an App Store. It is rather how Android is packaged. There is F-Droid type of store out there, it is just that it is not in the play store. As for iOS there really no proper way to install except jailbreaking any way. The bottom we don't need another App Store, rather a FOSS distribution of OS for Android (e.g: https://www.replicant.us/about.php ) that kind like the Debian distro for desktop Linux. As for iOS, is Darwin still open source, maybe a distro for iPhone with an open source Darwin fork?

0df8dkdfon Element (Matrix chat app) suspended from the Google Play Store

the difference is Signal is NOT federated, and matrix is. Which make it more like email, harder to censor.

0df8dkdfon Vue Native (2018)

Yup thank you. Web is only now coming to terms with desktop application development world of doing things. While I support the movement, however there are too many legacy stuff in the web and how front end developer use JS like jquery type of thing to manage a document base page. Maybe there should be a mode like 'stric mode' to support two way data binding.

0df8dkdfon Dominion Voting Systems Sues Rudy Giuliani

Who can actually down vote on HN?

0df8dkdfon Stash is a Go app which organizes and serves your porn

This this just for porn, or any video files you have on your hard drive?

0df8dkdfon Incomplete List of Mistakes in the Design of CSS

There is a difference between dispaly and visible in CSS. One just hides the element but doesn't rearrange the other elements around it, the other display as if the element doesn't exist.
