0df8dkdf··on Ad block and you don't stop
>The phone company isn't allowed to block you because you said something politically incorrect to my friends and tech companies should be no different.

AT&T does block their customer's email content without informing their paying customer. At this point I trust NSA more than these private companies. At least NSA has some government oversight and subject to FOIL request with these private companies it is basically the East India company all over again, wild wild west. They can do pretty much what they want. And like the Federal Reserve has their own private armies.

Vote with your money and internet usage.

well when you are service that has to rely on them to renew your site every 90 days, the data alone from different site is worth money.

0df8dkdf··on The Tech Stack of a One-Man SaaS
> There are too many dependencies

Agree. Blindly recommend this to anyone is not a good idea! It comes down to author's skill sets, and if the author is truly interested in tech, or just some guy want to implement an idea. Personally I am full stack and know how to make server scale without using Kubernetes. Since I've being using commonJS since it's inception, it is pretty easy to write web apps that scales using a light weight server layer like v8.

0df8dkdf··on The Tyranny of Merit
Ivy league are a bunch of investment syndicates through their endowment funds created as educational institution for tax advantages.

Not saying there aren't great scholars coming out them.

The question is how good can educational institution get, when it is design to be a investment vehicle for the wealthy?

0df8dkdf··on Linus Torvalds on the new MacBook Air
I have dual boated mac and linux for some time.

They main thing about running linux on mac are the drivers. All the touch pad are design to use with macOS.

Using mac is a also new way of using user interface with multi-touch and scroll.

0df8dkdf··on Mozilla DNS over HTTPS (DoH) and Trusted Recursive Resolver (TRR) Comment Period
Not to mention DNSEC is not available for every TLD. I urge operation system maker, Apple, MS, Linux to implement something like handshake.org

Stop with this stop political stuff in tech like root level zone server type of stuff.

0df8dkdf··on Funkwhale is looking for new maintainers
Thanks. Very nice project. how can I find more about the paid the work?
0df8dkdf··on US Government Continues Encryption War
> I think rigid hierarchy is more advantageous for overall survival

I can see how one can see it that way, it is probably what those who rigging the game were thinking when they first started, and like the saying goes "those who play a rigged game gets stupid over a long period of time". That's probably why empires collapse, too much corruption and too many people playing the rigged game. A rigged game kinda corrupt workability of the whole system. The short term advantage may not be so good in the long run.

>Mechanical keyboards are all the rage these days! People love the satisfying tactile sensation, and some go on great lengths to customise them to their exact liking.

Totally agree. it is one of reason why I hate 'smart phone', try using iphone of android when it is wet/rainy outside. It is a total disaster. Hope we switch back to tactile buttons very soon.

0df8dkdf··on What Is a Particle?
well, physics can be viewed as branch of ontology, I guess everything is a branch of ontology.
0df8dkdf··on Open Source does not mean “Includes Free Support”
Exactly! Developers publish code because they interest them. The market rate for developer are expensive. If people are too lazy to learn them self then pay the developer to do more work.

Mostly open source are code that interest developer period.

If you want some code that cater to your business or person need then pay for it!

0df8dkdf··on No More Free Work from Marak: Pay Me or Fork This
I'm a big promoter of open source software. However, I do see a fine line between getting open source and charging. In general if something is generic enough like Kernel of an OS or MVC framework for web dev, then yes open sources it.

However, it if it becomes specific and company clearly are benefiting and/profiting from it, then yeah charge for it!!

0df8dkdf··on Improving Postgres Connection Scalability: Snapshots
there is a reason why MSSQL is called tedious in npm moudle.
0df8dkdf··on Slack stores browser cookies without user consent
no you don't unless authentication is needed. How is post request and cookie even related? It is simple web dev 101.
0df8dkdf··on Slack stores browser cookies without user consent
No cookies are 'necessary' for site functionality, unless there is a login needed.

No cookies are 'necessary' to just display information, pics and videos.

0df8dkdf··on Show HN: Baller ToDo – a no-list todo app
Na, PMs who do that should all be beaten senselessly with a baseball bat, metaphorically of course? ;-)
0df8dkdf··on Why not use GraphQL?
beacuse deep structure query sucks! And next thing you know you are installing abunch of npm package to prevent that. And I don't trust anything from FB including React!!
0df8dkdf··on ReCAPTCHA and the Anonymous Experience
interesting project. However, couldn't what they are doing be simply solved by applying bcrypt or scrypt in JS?
0df8dkdf··on ReCAPTCHA and the Anonymous Experience
but yeah. rCaptcha is horrible. And you know google is making money of you when you use it, and some times it takes 10 - 15 minutes to finish one thing. I hope the site owner are getting paid for my work, not just google.
0df8dkdf··on ReCAPTCHA and the Anonymous Experience
what about hCaptcha https://www.hcaptcha.com?
0df8dkdf··on Ask HN: As a person, what can I do to improve a city?
support local farmers and food supplies! The ones that practice organic farming (but don't need to be certified by USDA)

Get to know your local and state politicians, sheriff. That is way more important than the election that just happened.

0df8dkdf··on What Happened to XPath?
Hahah, that just really got carried away. Ok, any idea if there is replacement? I found version 1 useful for scrapping web sites. Or should I just stick with 1.0 ?

thanks you for mentioning that it is one of most annoying thing about the new mac!

0df8dkdf··on Mailing lists are resistant to censorship
git over i2p seems a good option as well to go outside RIAA proof.
0df8dkdf··on Show HN: Tara – A free Jira alternative, now with Gitlab
The fact that it is .ai means that they are doing data collection. And you are the product.

I already don't trust jira too much. Unless it is self-hosted and you want to be a test data collection set for them. Then it is not worth it.

0df8dkdf··on Show HN: What would mechanical programming look like?
nice it is like pure data for mechanics. thumbs up!!!
0df8dkdf··on Ask HN: Jack-of-all-trades of HN, how do you approach job search?
> How do you find a good recruiter? By asking people in your network.

Yeah I am a bit weak in the area. I have stopped LinkedIn after MS bought them, a concern about my data privacy. One friend recommended a recruiter, wasn't very helpful. Would be open for other recommendation someone who is NOT just looking at buzzwords.

0df8dkdf··on Ask HN: Jack-of-all-trades of HN, how do you approach job search?
or just say full stack. I hate buzz word, but sometimes it helps the manager to understand.
