0cf8612b2e1e··on Xbox goes down. You can't play games you own on disc
Nothing infuriates me quite like an additional gaming account inside of a dedicated gaming platform. Running under a Steam/PSN/Xbox account and want to play the game you just bought? Sucks to be you. First create a Ubisoft/Blizzard/indie-studio-with-one-game login so we can better monetize something.

Do most installations create a git user account with login permissions?
0cf8612b2e1e··on Linux Desktop Market Share Surpasses 10% in North America
I hope this is not true, but it feels plausible to me. All of those “TV boxes” selling residential proxies may be thousands of additional Linux installs showing up in the stats. If those machines then make a habit of rotating their user agent, could noticeably impact the numbers.

What business domain is the software?
0cf8612b2e1e··on Dubious research tied to Red Bull has shaped energy drink policy
Red Bulls are a pretty pedestrian caffeine content by today’s standards, 80mg/can. Other brands are usually 150-200 mg.
0cf8612b2e1e··on Dubious research tied to Red Bull has shaped energy drink policy
That lemonade was stupidly high, 390mg caffeine. Only serious addicts could drink that without noticing strong effects.

What’s most remarkable about that case, is that it was a Panera. Could have added 50mg and it would still be more caffeinated than I would expect of the establishment. There was no need to go to the extreme end.

0cf8612b2e1e··on The most official water costs $120k a gallon
Emphasis on the slightly. I believe it would take weeks of only consuming heavy water. You could certainly drink a single glass of it without ill effects.
0cf8612b2e1e··on The most official water costs $120k a gallon
I at first thought you meant taking hydrogen gas and burning it in O18, which seems even simpler than bulk processing water.
0cf8612b2e1e··on Run Kimi K3 using 29 GB of RAM at 0.50 tok/s
Sure, you cannot do 1M, but there are plenty of useful questions you could ask that are far more modest. Simple Q+A, look at this function, how would you design X? All of those could have few paragraphs of outputs that would finish within a day.

I saw someone’s excellent idea that if you have a slow system like this, you should communicate by email. It is no longer meant for realtime iteration, but more pointed questions for which there is more effort and time expected on both parties.
0cf8612b2e1e··on The most official water costs $120k a gallon
The US is technically metric in that the units are defined in terms of the metric equivalent. A US inch is exactly 2.54cm.
0cf8612b2e1e··on The most official water costs $120k a gallon
I am failing to understand why there would be a distinction. They all seem arbitrary set points you learn.

450F vs 230C does not feel like anything gets easier there. Maybe in some highly technical baking there are some nice deltas that appear?

0cf8612b2e1e··on The session you cannot take with you
Considering the two different people who fat finger my email address when signing up for services, I wish more systems required a validation step.

Somewhat relatedly, how do the economics for Huggingface work? They must be hosting petabytes of models and datasets by now. I have downloaded quite a few “just in case”, only to replace them with the later iteration months later.

Does the file hosting actually cost peanuts when you do it yourself and the cloud has shattered my understanding of what it actually costs to deliver so much data?

0cf8612b2e1e··on US oil inventories fall to 'precariously low' level as Iran war disrupts supply
Other countries have also been tapping into their own strategic reserves. When those run dry, that will put more pressure on any remaining sources.

I am struggling to find updates on European reserve levels, but they must look similarly dire at this point.

0cf8612b2e1e··on Our position on open-weights models
Do you expect any of the labs to have an accompanying data dump with: here’s every book ever written, newspaper article, song lyric, Disney movie, GitHub repo, etc. Oh, and we obviously never paid for any of this.

Even if you did, I doubt training is bit-for-bit reproducible, so you will always have to take someone’s word for the final artifact.

0cf8612b2e1e··on Our position on open-weights models
I was led to believe that the US does have internal sources of these, but they are largely undeveloped. For years the processing could not economically compete with China so shutdown.

Which is to say, given internal subsidies, the US could eventually produce some on its own.

Unless I misunderstood the situation.

0cf8612b2e1e··on Self-contained highly-portable Python distributions
That’s not a bad idea. uvx feels like a temporary hack on which I can’t rely for a permanent deployment, but it is all probably fine. I would want to at least materialize a real environment so I know that it is not getting randomly deleted as cache/temp gets cleared.

Unfortunately, it’s still not my ideal use case of distributing executables to Windows machines. I really want a single artifact users could freely share without any pre-configuration. I guess I could have a batch/vbs script which would bootstrap uv plus the rest of the machinery, but that is more moving parts than I would like.

They could have just emailed new codes to every legacy email on file and that would at least given the possibility of keeping most customers whole.
0cf8612b2e1e··on Self-contained highly-portable Python distributions
I keep meaning to explore compiling Python +libs to WASM for running in a desktop environment. It is already Python, so I am willing to accommodate enormous performance losses. I just want to package up the code into something more straightforward than PyInstaller.
0cf8612b2e1e··on Jensen Huang's first post on Twitter is in defense of open access to AI models
How does the advertisement process work exactly? $FAMOUSPERSON joins platform and makes their first post. Were they a nobody, it would be screaming into the void.

Does the celebrity contact news outlets, “Hey guys, I joined Twitter, I will make my first post soon.”

Equally amusing because Huang could call any media organization on the planet and have a full interview that day.

Just want to chime in as an anecdote who could not migrate. I attempted to migrate within the deadlines, yet the system refused to work. Contacted support and they were no help, in spite of my receipt and presumably, Notch’s log of my purchase.

But hey, trillion dollar company tried hard. Nothing more could have been done.

0cf8612b2e1e··on IRGC claims it destroyed Amazon's Bahrain data center
Who, if anyone, is Iran allowed to retaliate against?

The US started this. Amazon is an American company with many governmental and military contracts. Why would it not be a valid target?

How many Iranian hospitals, schools, bridges, data centers, etc have been destroyed?

Energy density of liquid fuels cannot be beat by batteries, so this is not competitive if you are looking to maximize cargo. However, there are plenty of short haul flights: private jets, island hopping, regional routes where you need to move little mass.

0cf8612b2e1e··on Critical Minerals: Reducing U.S. import reliance with substitution and recycling
I read that in the Cold War, the military expected some incredibly high failure rate (30%+) of the bombs due to technical failures. These are incredibly complicated machines.
