0cf8612b2e1e··on Sony makes bold claim about game ownership
When have gamers held firm in a boycott situation? A lot of tough talk that crumbles when a new hat is released.

There was that infamous picture of the Steam Group, something like, “Never Buy CoD XYZ”. Half of the group members were playing it.

0cf8612b2e1e··on Pre-Release of Polars 2.0
End of the day, they both get the job done.

Pandas is more ergonomic in that some ideas can be more tersely represented. The downside is that this results in more dynamism which can change if the underlying data gets updated. Polars is more strict in that it will not silently flip a data type on you. However this strictness does come at the cost of being a bit slower to type and some data idioms not having a good Polars equivalent.

People like to note the speed improvements, but that is the least interesting thing about the library. Rarely have I ever had a problem where I was bottlenecked by Pandas throughout.

Polars is very much a Pandas 2.0 with a bunch of lessons learned. I do not think it is earth shattering changes, but it is worth migrating when you can.

0cf8612b2e1e··on Mom gets 6-month suspended sentence for letting 5-year-old walk to the pond
People should watch the Netflix version of Old Enough! - it is a Japanese show where young (!) children 3-5 year old walk around the neighborhood doing chores. The one scene I recall was where a child was supposed to carry a fish to the butcher and was being followed by hungry cats.

This behavior has repeatedly frustrated me. I am writing some new transformation, want to see the results, and my first few sentinel rows are nowhere to be seen because they have been shuffled.

I do not think of a dataframe as a set, but an ordered collection of rows. My source csv had the rows in this order and I want that maintained unless I choose maximum performance.

So, if you have the time and energy to go through an arbitrarily painful process, you can always vote.

Texas just announced they are going to shut down more polling locations in the upcoming election. I wonder if it will happen to be in a Democrat concentrated region.

Unless the absentee process is guaranteed to be frictionless, it is inviting more rat fuckery.

0cf8612b2e1e··on USPS Built an Untested, Undocumented Ballot-Blocking System Despite Injunction
We absolutely do know. Study after study has found actual voter fraud to be practically non existent. What does happen a tiny but measurable amount of time: John Smith signing on the line of the wrong John Smith.

Actual, intentional rampant fraud has not been documented.

0cf8612b2e1e··on Apple reveals 'shocking evidence' from ex-employee's MacBook in OpenAI suit
I am constantly dumb founded at the people who conduct deeply personal business on a company laptop. Some individuals do not even own their own computer. Has every job hunt they have pursued has been done on their previous employers equipment?

I would question if those sites only worked with Chrome or just had some user agent filtering in place. There are Chrome only websites, but thankfully most things I encounter are just requiring a blessed id, which can be easily faked.

0cf8612b2e1e··on Yen weakens past ¥160 per dollar, eroding intervention gains
shoobiedoo was now stuck with a locally useless $100 American. So, he was actually given a hassle to resolve of getting it converted back to yen.

If the guy was so hot to not lose a dime, he could have said, “Loan me 10k yen right now, I will pay you back ASAP”.

If the guy is in Japan with American currency, he likely knows the exchange rate and exactly the terms he was getting.

Or passes to buses, trains, planes, concerts, sports arenas, and possibly soon government identification.

There was a recent story about some guy who had been buying season tickets for decades by paper ticket. The stadium shutdown the paper ticketing and left him without an option, except to purchase a smartphone.

0cf8612b2e1e··on Amazon now hides all customer reviews on products
By this logic, nothing can ever be shared by email. Else someone (user included) might scrape some value from it.

If it is truly for my benefit, they could let me opt in or out of the behavior. I truly derive value from being able to search the local copy of my email to track purchases.

0cf8612b2e1e··on Amazon now hides all customer reviews on products
Oh I know why they did it. I am still furious that I am yet again getting a worse experience.
0cf8612b2e1e··on Amazon now hides all customer reviews on products
Amazon has also changed their email receipts to be worthless. Previously, you would get the product name and price paid, giving you a minimal record sufficient for tracking. Now you get an email that says N items, broadly categorized (housewares, pets, clothing) and no pricing information.

Clearly a customer focused decision.

0cf8612b2e1e··on Tracking Costco gas prices
There was a quote from the Costco CFO that the rotisserie chicken cost them like $40 million annually. It is definitely a loss leader.

0cf8612b2e1e··on Building a backyard office, the build and cost breakdown
This is pretty fancy to call it a shed. Walk outside any Lowe’s or Home Depot and you will see several pre-built options that can be had for $500-$4000 with them getting increasingly elaborate.

Electrical + AC is a firm line where that goes from shed to detached office.

0cf8612b2e1e··on Oceans hit highest temperature on record
I assure you, it is not performative. While solar is the fastest growing energy source in human history, it still takes time to replace a century of existing infrastructure.

Despite rising electricity demand, so much solar has already been installed that fossil fuel generation decreased last year. Renewables now generate more total energy than coal. This will only continue as more solar + batteries come online. Thanks to Iran, renewable projects are getting fast tracked globally to reduce the dependence on foreign energy.

0cf8612b2e1e··on Oceans hit highest temperature on record
Even the title and first line of that article supports my point, “New coal plants hit ‘10-year’ global high in 2025 – but power output still fell”.

Coal capacity is increasing, but it is not being used. Mostly China is constructing new plants but leaving them idle.

Check the Ember 2026 report for all the global details:

..In another global milestone, renewables overtook coal power in 2025. Solar, wind, hydropower and other renewable sources together contributed more than a third of global electricity generation for the first time in the modern power system. Conversely, the share of coal power fell below a third for the first time in history.

.. Driven by record solar growth, low-carbon power generation increased by 887 TWh in 2025, outpacing electricity demand growth of 849 TWh. Solar power alone met 75% of the net increase in electricity demand. Together with wind, the two sources met almost all (99%) demand growth. For the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, and only the fifth time this century, fossil generation did not rise, recording a small fall of 38 TWh (-0.2%).
Also, a whole 200GW new coal+gas capacity in the pipeline! OMG! In 2025, the world installed 647GW of solar capacity, generating 2778 TWh.

https://ember-energy.org/latest-insights/global-electricity-...

0cf8612b2e1e··on Oceans hit highest temperature on record
Solar + wind were 99% of new generation capacity last year. Fossil fuel usage dropped for one of the first times ever. Renewables generated more than coal.

Solar installation is huge and the increase continues to accelerate. Every year has seen a record amount of installed solar. Solar started at zero two decades ago and is already curbing other sources.

0cf8612b2e1e··on Anthropic Could Aim to Raise $100B in Blockbuster IPO, Valuing It at $2T
Are they profitable?
0cf8612b2e1e··on Tracking Costco gas prices

Costco gas is famously a loss leader, typically running 15 to 20 cents below surrounding stations.
Is this true? I always assumed that Costco just had better deals/longer horizon commitments so it could undercut local stations. Maybe they even own a refinery just to maintain the best margin.

It technically does not matter today. Sure the SOTA fabs only exist in a few places, but it’s not like a 2010/2015/2020 era chip is unusable trash. All of which are more geographically distributed.
