01acheru··on The Rise of Malört, an Unexpected Midwest princess
That's good to know and terrible news. It looks like a different paywall than the one I see going directly to the NYT link, it let me view the article the first time and now simply entered an unresolving state.

Anyway shame on you NYT, this is like boycotting the web archive, ridiculous...

edit: IDK how ethically right it is (in my opinion it is) but when posting paywalled content we should post the archive link directly or at least as part of the submission

01acheru··on The mystery of why left-handers are so much rarer (2016)
My father did it when he was a child so he could "be like his brother" who was 1.5 year older and the favorite son of his mother (this brother was the first male son after a female who was the first overall).

He is now right handed for almost everything but really skilled with the left hand, I remember that once he broke the right wrist and could easily write with the left hand for example.

Threat model: The Mossad doing Mossad things with your [change "email address" with "anything"]

Solution:

- Magical amulets?

- Fake your own death, move into a submarine?

- YOU'RE STILL GONNA BE MOSSAD'ED UPON

I think that's it.

01acheru··on Nothing: Simply Do Nothing
Thanks for the link! When it is well done comedy often covers something more profound and summarizes it in an accessible and more memorable manner just like the video you are talking about.

"The world is fucked, and you cannot un-fuck it."

"You will die one day just as confused as you are now."

"Everything you think you need to do was done before you and will be done after you."

"Whether you are fat or thin haters will hate."

"Nothing really matters."

There are some really deep insights in all of those thoughts, thanks for sharing.

PS: this remembers me of a sketch about giraffes being an animal created by a gay friend of the comedian, after the sketch I learned that giraffes engage in male-male acts more often than male-female acts and got mindblown. They have been called "especially gay" for this fact.

01acheru··on Not Another Technical Debt Article
That's an extremely narrow view on what's technical debt. (imho)
01acheru··on Not Another Technical Debt Article
My brain read the title as "Yet another technical debt article", I read it anyway and it really sounded like yet another of the same stuff, then I read the title back and decided to write this comment.

I don't see why this should be "not another" except it is shorter than those ten pages long blabbing medium posts, but the content is always the same.

01acheru··on Sharks test positive for cocaine in waters off Brazilian coast
What an awesome time to be a shark!
01acheru··on ChatGPT just (accidentally) shared all of its secret rules
Remembering that poor guy always makes me sad...
01acheru··on ChatGPT just (accidentally) shared all of its secret rules
When building a toy demo where we taught GPT4 how to perform queries against a specific Postgres schema, we had to use a lot of those "I repeat", "AGAIN YOU MUST NOT", "please don't", etc. to avoid it embedding markdown, comments or random text in the responses where we just wanted SQL statements.

It was a facepalming experience but in the end the results were actually pretty good.

I came here to say the same, this guy pushed Linux desktop adoption forward like few others by himself and just for passion.

01acheru··on Intel is trucking a 916k-pound 'Super Load' across Ohio to its new fab
Well if they mean assemble instead of build the things change a bit, but anyway even when talking about big and complex things there are big and complex things that can be "easily" split into pieces and assembled at a later time and other things that cannot be split so easily so much more resources are needed to assemble the thing in its final form.

Just guesses it's not something I'm into.

01acheru··on Intel is trucking a 916k-pound 'Super Load' across Ohio to its new fab
IMHO because it's not something trivial to build so you would also need to build the stuff to build it. To build complex (and huge) machinery you need specialized factories with lots of other big and complex machinery, you cannot just create a factory to build n=1 objects it's not economically viable.
01acheru··on I spend £8,500 a year to live on a train
So... you afford a house for 3k/y and say that one cannot afford one for 10k/y? I'm missing something about your point. For 10k/y you can live in most of Europe, of course not the center of Paris or Munich or Amsterdam or whatever but there is a lot of Europe outside the center of large cities.
01acheru··on I spend £8,500 a year to live on a train
If people spend 1k/mo on average it means it is totally possible to spend 850. As I said it is possible to spend 850 or even less in a half of the country. Average, average, average... what an average world.
01acheru··on I spend £8,500 a year to live on a train
With 850€/month you can pay rent (a small apartment for one person) and bills in more or less half of Germany, same for France. The average net after tax have no meaning in this context.
01acheru··on I spend £8,500 a year to live on a train
C'mon there is nothing brave or adventurous about it, it is just first world fancy. I'm happy he enjoys it but end of story let's not make this something special, it is not.
01acheru··on I spend £8,500 a year to live on a train
I said most of Europe, not all of Europe and the UK is known for being one of the most expensive countries in Europe. Same for Scandinavia, Belgium, Netherlands and Denmark.

But there are like 20 other countries in Europe where it is totally possible. Don't judge everything based only on you backyard.

01acheru··on I spend £8,500 a year to live on a train
I'm from Italy and lived alone in Greece, Spain and Portugal so I know it is surely possible. And lived in cities not in the middle of nowhere.
01acheru··on I spend £8,500 a year to live on a train
It absolutely is in all of southern Europe except the center of some large cities, same for eastern Europe, rural France and Germany, etc.
01acheru··on I spend £8,500 a year to live on a train
All fine and good, I hope he likes it but €10k is a lot of money to live more or less like a beggar.

With €10k/y you can afford a house+food+bills in most of Europe and in many places it is way cheaper than that.

So... yeah, I find it incredibly stupid.

01acheru··on British intelligence able to read and flag private Snapchat messages
My exact thought. If the Spanish prosecutors want somebody to pay for those expenses it should be the British gov or whatever other agency as it is the same as if I warned the police of some fake bomb threat.
01acheru··on Cyborg cockroach could be the future of earthquake search and rescue
Thanks for the infos, but it isn't a logical process.

It comes deep from the guts and I cannot control it in any way, it is really a phobia and you should see how I behave when I see one, anyone, IRL.

I'm for the Palestinian cause since forever but please let's not make HN political.
01acheru··on Cyborg cockroach could be the future of earthquake search and rescue
I had to close the article after seeing the hand holding the cockroach, I'm still disgusted after a couple of minutes.

If you have the same disgust don't open the article or open it with images disabled.

BTW TIL it is called katsaridaphobia.

01acheru··on Major outages across ChatGPT and API
What about Johnny GPTonic?
01acheru··on n8n.io - A powerful workflow automation tool
The problem I see in n8n is that a lot of the integrations seem a little half baked. We tried to use it instead of Zapier something less than an year ago:

- you have an FTP node, but it doesn't work with FTP over TLS

- you have an AWS SES node, but cannot attach files to the email

- you have a Salesforce node, but it only has very few options available

Just to name a few that I remember now, we were quite disappointed. It is a great software crafted with care, but the integration nodes seem to be built on a hurry to say "over N integrations available".

Maybe it changed now that it reached 1.0, I don't know but they need to invest a bit into it.

01acheru··on Google Maps has become an eyesore
I came here to look for someone talking about it and totally agree, Google Maps routes are getting really worse over time and now I switched to Apple Maps almost exclusively.

I can understand the jam thing but the weird route thing is crazy, especially because that route often makes you spend more time not less. It prefers weird backroads with lots of turns instead of straight larger roads (and that's stupid) but a thing I noticed traveling a lot for work in a hilly area is that it doesn't seem to take road pendency into account. Sometimes it makes you go up and down a hill instead of staying in the valley road that goes around it: it take twice the time IRL but is like it thinks "whoa, 5km instead of 7, that's a great optimization" and that's incredibly stupid.

Apple maps is more conservative and tries to stick to larger roads if possible only sending you into more obscure ones if it is very convenient.

Another thing is that Google Maps is really aggressive on labeling something as a road: sometimes they are off roads, tractor paths or large trails that a car cannot travel on but it doesn't care.

Those are my impressions traveling mostly in Italy and bordering countries.
