00098345··on Hello, I’m Mr. Null. My Name Makes Me Invisible to Computers
SQL summation without coalescing null addenda to zero. The sum result was a null. This had been going on for years. Oops!

The lesson/mitigation was to add a NOT NULL attribute on top of a DEFAULT 0.

I have to disagree with Hoare sensei there. The number is nowhere near a billion. I personally know of one case that totaled to a billion.
00098345··on When to Avoid JSONB in a PostgreSQL Schema
This is good but please, to preserve your own sanity, first design the table struct properly to capture all attributes you can think of in separate columns and add the appropriate primary key. Then add the extra JSON(B) column for unforeseen data. Keep iterating till the table is still small.

00098345··on “I Want to Know What Code Is Running Inside My Body”
Not necessary because this is realised to a certain extent through safety standards. Certified earthquake proof. Done.

Now, in this case, FDA approval should include software standards that prevent this scenario. Done*.

Very talented and humble guy.

It is interesting that Mr. Landis mentions entropy (in Thermodynamical sense I hope). I have always wondered what it means here, in this solar system. Assuming the solar system has negligible energy flowing in, what does it mean when life on earth is reducing entropy in this system? We are tipping the balance by assimilating atoms in a more orderly fashion with each birth. This means something bad is happening somewhere close-by. ;-(
00098345··on Jupiter’s Great Red Spot Likely a Massive Heat Source
The current understanding of waves on a liquid surface is attributed to a clear boundary between two fluids with a density difference and a velocity gradient. Gravity plays no role in this.

Security on bare metal OS is a hard problem.

Square or cube that to get an idea of security in virtualization.

00098345··on LastPass autofill exploit
You are approaching from the wrong angle. How much was the exploit "worth" to the company?

Some people want to watch the burn. An attacker could make it known anonymously and LastPass will never recover from that onslaught.

00098345··on Ask HN: Why isn't there a professional body for Computer Science?
Then my friendly advice is to add an "/s" after your comment so that you leave no doubt about the interpretation.

> Elasticity is how much you can deform (stretch) an object, before the deformation is no longer reversible. Think of a rubber band, you can stretch it a little, and it returns to its original shape. Stretch it a lot, and it breaks down and does not return to its original shape. > Plasticity is how much you can deform an object before it breaks. This is the snapping point in the rubber band, where it completely breaks.

These both are completely false.

Elasticity is the idealistic property of a solid material to get back to it's original shape after a deformation force is retracted. (property of most solid metals where stress is much below the yield point)

Plasticity is the idealistic property of a solid material to stay in the deformed shape after a deformation force is retracted. (Plasticine)

00098345··on I got arrested in Kazakhstan and represented myself in court
It is unclear what exactly happened. And my guess would be that it was deliberately left out because the blogger initiated the convo.

One should try it in the US after having his visa expired there.

00098345··on We need to call American breakfast what it often is: dessert
Way to go ahead to twist your parent comment into something else. You will never get any amount of sweetness in a south indian breakfast.

But in general, you are correct in that diabetics are off the charts in India. We lead in cardio vascular diseases as well. :-(

> All, like Jobs, are considered to be "assholes" by some, and absolutely loved by others.

I think the results are appreciated by-and-large by the people who haven't worked with them. For people who have, they might add the "...but he is an asshole" postscript/disclaimer.

It is difficult to judge Phil Katz's case. Phil was very very attached to his father. His fathers' passing destroyed him. His father was probably his best friend. I think that is more important that anything else in Phil's case.
00098345··on Has Physics Gotten Something Really Important Really Wrong?
World-over, the degree conferred for significant contribution through original work in Science (and Engineering) has principally been Doctor of Philosophy. I doubt if it will ever change.
