As for "Programmers generally have to be hired and paid." argument there are plenty of good free and open source projects (Linux, Redis etc) where alot of the gruntwork was done for free one their time by the various developer(s) and only later did they make money (in most cases they do not) from their software.
You are putting the cart before the horse.
It is YOUR choice of course, but once again the whole approach stinks, imho.
