The International Telecommunication Union's Child Online Protection initiative advises Google of URLs that contain child sexual exploitation. I expect that it advises Microsoft as well but wouldn't know - Bing doesnt remove the items from their index as Google does.
I discussed this with Clark County Washington Deputy C. Bull on Friday. She suggested I point the problem out to the FBI. I told her that the FBI obviously knows what Bing is doing but does not pursue it. I have some theories as to why but really I dont know.
My concept of ethics evolved considerable a result of the 1986 Space Shuttle explosion. While most blame NASA for shady engineering I blame Morton Thiokol engineer Roger Boisjoly. He recommended the launch be scrubbed when he filed a safety report with his management.
I regard Boisjoly as ultimately responsible because he knew the o-rings were out of thermal tolerance yet he failed in his effort to get the launch scrubbed.
In his case the right thing to do would have been to have gone to the press.
While law enforcement is tasked with busting child pornographers I hold our elected officials ultimately responsible. For that reason, this evening I will write to each of the Redmond mayor, city councilmembers, King County councilmembers, each of Washington's legislators, the Washington governor and our Senators.
I would write to others but I am strapped for cash and so cannot purchase much postage.
