I hate the trend of new sites putting the stock information for each company mentioned in the article.

How did this became a thing ? Do ppl need that data to be shoved in the face like that ?

Is it a trend? Note that this is the Wall Street Journal. I think they are targeting a readership that is particularly interested in stock information.

WSJ and Bloomberg are famous for that feature, because they are popular with finance nerds.

I am not sure, I have been seeing it pop up on every article being posted on HN and reddit.

There have been a lot more Bloomberg articles submitted to HN lately.

WSJ, Bloomberg, and I think Yahoo! Finance all do that, and it kind of makes sense for them to.
