How much patience?

A couple of months.

Out of curiosity, what sort of hardware is typically used for this?

CUDA, with high end NVidia video cards.

Actually, I think he did it on a significantly less powerful system. Just an Athlon64x2 or similar. CUDA could speed it up considerably.

I am using an 8 core Xeon machine.
