So yeah, to parent poster: Go download Unity and do the tutorials.
It's also worth working through some OpenGL tutorials to get a feel for how the lower level stuff works.
That's especially true for someone who already knows programming, the answer would be different for someone who had no programming experience.
Nowadays, I'm a web dev, but I build games in my spare time, and have lately been doing it with Canvas/Javascript. Just like SDL it takes some of the finicky bits out of your way, but is still pretty low level somewhat.
- Learn Unity make a couple of small 3D games.
- Learn some basic OpenGL , learn to write your own shaders and understand how it all works.
- After Unity try working with other engines ( work with something like the CryEngine[1] , it costs like 9.90$ / month royalty free)
- As you make games start making your own game engine as a side project.
ProTip: Open Source it to speed up development.
