Cyanogen runs one of the nodes. I'm not sure where Whisper Systems receives their funding from. At one point Twitter was involved with them, though I believe that is no longer the case.

Like all sensible crypto systems it doesn't matter if the server is compromised, encryption is done client-side. The project is open-source, so you can verify this for yourself.
