He's actually like this most of the time, it's a shame that the media only reports his outbursts. He's an amazing person and surprisingly accepting on other people and fellow developers.
To me, he just sometimes lacks tact. And there are way too many overly-sensitive people out there.
I think DeRaadt is in the same position (although I'll concede that he is more tactless than Torvalds).
