This article confuses statistics with (at least on my assumption) pure math. He talks about the use of math by journalists in data analysis and visualisation, when that's purely the realm of the statistician, who need not necessarily know any calculus. Similarly I've met super intelligent pure math PhD candidates that are working at the precipice of their (very esoteric) field but wouldn't know where to start with applying "data science" stats/ML techniques some interesting slab of data.
