I don't get it. Why does the possibility that you may not wake up be terrifying? If you're dead, you're dead. No less dead than a dead chicken. A peaceful death while you're unconscious is one of the nicer gifts a human can get in life.

That is not to say you have to consciously injure yourself, of course.
