I use a Firefox addon called RefControl so you can customise the referer that is sent on a per site basis. I have it configured to send the referer "http://www.google.com/" to nytimes.com which gets rid of the paywall.
Chrome: Right-click, Open Link in Incognito Window
or clear your cookies. It's probably a good idea to delete your cookies on a daily basis.
If you use Chome, just visit the link in a new incognito window.
In Firefox --> Right "click" on the link and choose "Open Link in New Private Window".
