What does happen if you try to attach gdb? You can't, or the application just quits, or do you get some error message? I'm somewhat curious now.

I think this is the story that the parent was referencing. Here's the story from 2005 and a kernel module loadable at runtime that gets around the problem.

It's probably just PT_DENY_ATTACH that causes the debugger to quit.
