The main problem it solves is to allow offline development in sandboxed environments like ChromeBooks and Windows RT devices (or even iPads if you had a BT keyboard).
My 11yo has a ChromeBook and uses Cloud9 IDE to do all his coding at home. When he's on the go with mom (home-schooling at the park) he can't code; sadness...
If he had a git clone in a sandbox he could keep coding; happiness...
