I would suggest an older-generation macbook. Between the excellent hardware build quality and the well-maintained software, they don't become obsolete quickly. I've got enough cash on hand to buy a new laptop several times over, but my old macbook is still going.

If it's battery life you want, then you definitely should go with the macbook air.
