All political systems have failure modes, and shallow populist demagoguery is one of the failure modes of Democracy. The US IMO is not a well-functioning democracy and hasn't been for a while.

The failure modes of autocracies are more obvious: bad kings, low information decision making, incompetent bureaucrats, and no way to remove them peacefully without waiting for them to die.

Ahh, so you’re saying we’ve reached the worst of both worlds?

We live in an autocracy run by people so terrible at their jobs that despite holding all three branches of government, they're gonna lose the next election.

IMO we kind of lucked out. I shudder to think of what might have happened if Trump, Musk, and that whole crowd were reasonable people who could work together and take criticism.

It’s actually a kakistocracy; if they were reasonable people who could work together and take criticism they wouldn’t be the worst kind of people.
