I always wonder who the folks who build these things are. If they become too popular, it seems like a good way to have the government pay you a visit you will not enjoy. But they also seem like technically interesting problems to solve. Glad someone is out there preserving these games in any case.

They might be technically interesting problems to solve but these days they're just using AI to solve them so they aren't really learning anything about those interesting problems.

This one is made by Russians. Their government has bigger problems to deal with. They turn a blind eye as long as Russian companies are not targeted.

A lot of people live in places where the government does not really care to use police to enforce copyright, or where this just isn’t really considered illegal.

This generation's "geohot" and friends, most likely. Curiosity, youth and a much lower entry barrier will always win.

The PlayStation platform in general is the easiest console to reverse engineer. There’s a lack of security in depth that makes it easy to reverse engineer.

Maybe that's due to lack of interest?

The Xbox is flopping commercially, and doesn't have any exclusives that are not on PC.

On the other hand, The Nintendo Switch got a jailbreak fairly early in its lifecycle.

Surely, if there's enough motivation, hacking any console is possible.

Xbox games typically come to windows too.
