Check out Tabius if you use Chrome. It automatically creates and opens new tabs in a group as you describe in your second to last paragraph.

Afaik tab groups are a much weaker idea because they are non-recursive.

s/recursive/nested? I don’t remember Tree style tabs supporting recursion.
