> I rented a 4K sq ft house
Excuse me, but what could you possibly do with a ~360sqm house than one half the size wouldn't do? A family of 4 for sure fits in even a smaller one.

I could have rented a townhouse for $300-400 less, but then there are different constraints. Small or no yard, tiny kitchens, no garage etc.
I was perfectly content with a 2200 sq ft ranch in Henderson Nevada.
That's just sad. I knew that real estate was a pain in most countries around the world, but I never realized that choice in the land of freedom was that constrained. I guess in most places it's basically: "Detached House, Large".
