The sequels are possibly what you were expecting to read in the first book, which IIRC its ending paves the way for it. Politics don't go away though, but it doesn't stagnate either. Much dynamism in and among the factions.
I was sold it as "Red Mars is where they colonise mars" but from the part I've read so far, it seems pretty colonised already, and the racism has already set in
