That would be relevant when a Debian/Ubuntu/whatever upgrade switched those users to Sway. That's the problem: The Gnome 3 users wanted to create something different but instead of doing just that they changed a project that already had existing users.
It's not the "Gnome users" that wanted to create something different - it's the Gnome developers that did.
It's the developers prerogative to do with their project whatever they want.
If you build a house for yourself you can do whatever you wish inside it. If you turn your house into a homeless shelter then you no longer can. Same if you take over management of an existing public building.
