CachyOS is No1 the last three months and is LLM friendly. Debian is the underlying OS for a bunch of distros and its more popular.
The donations are 100% budy-budy and rich kids rubbing shoulders. Nothing else / more than that.
That said, it’s their money. They use it as they please. At the same time, trying to see everything through capitalistic lenses is sort of myopic IMO.
The original commentor mentioned the donations were ideologically motivated. I just don't think that is the case. I think people are excited about something that doesn't really have any ideological attachments to it and is just focusing on making something cool. My anecdotal observation of the internet in general and day to day life tells me people are burnt out from that.
Means that you haven't been looking. Your 100% figure is incorrect for the mere fact of Omarchy having hundreds of ordinary people as patrons. https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/donation-form/omarchy-patronage
Heck, Linux Mint gets 15k a month.
And yeah, you are missing the point. The original claim was about 100% of money coming from DHH's friends/buddies/rich kids, and from far-right at that. Hundreds of public donations was merely the sinplest way to debunk the ridiculous claim. The original claim was false.
If we go deeper, we can easily deduct that not only is the 100% number in the claim not correct, but that wherever it might (sic!) be arguably (sic!) correct, even then the number is close to 0%.
I think I'm pretty on point if someone insists on focusing on trivial technicalities while ignoring the bigger picture.
By all means keep doing what you're doing. Just don't act surprised when people don't look up to you and take your words with respect.
Very poor coming from you.
2. Companies, or rather mostly CEOs donating are the usual circle of questionable characters where you can just search for "why is (name) problematic".
They're basically buddies donating to DHH not the project. The only ones that make sense are the tokens from AI companies to be used in actual development.
Gnome has lots of issues that still need to be fixed. Even if you're happy with it, you could find something on the bugtracker that you'd really like addressed. It's basically like seeing a house being built by a big crew, then someone completely unrelated painting the front doors and getting paid more than all of them and credited for the house as a whole.
