For anyone else wondering, I guess Slashdot was an old website like Reddit. Like the "Reddit hug of death"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slashdot_effect

There's no reason to be this mean to us olds.

Indeed. Especially since HN is probably considered "old and cranky" but the younger generation, who get their dose of language flamewars and JS framework from some other place that I can't know of. (Can you get a decent "common lisp vs scheme" flame on tiktok ?)

Only if you have a Beowulf cluster of tiktoks

Lol I see the old /. nerd are still beating on that old joke.

It was supposed to be a Beowulf cluster of Furbies, right?

I was user #404 on slashdot.

I tried looking you up but were unable to find your profile site.

https://slashdot.org/~dmd look at the top right where it says dmd (404)

It was a joke :)

https://m.slashdot.org/profile/404/ ?

Woosh

https://slashdot.org/~dmd , look at the top right where it shows user number

woosh.

https://www.404s.design/

Given I spent hours timing my signup perfectly almost 30 years ago so I'd get #404, maybe you're the one being woosh'd.

No, they couldn't find you because you are 404. That's the joke. Wooosh

I thought you were joking! Given it's 404.

Actually you still are user #404.

Speak for yourself.

This is for people unfamiliar. According to the Wikipedia page, it looks like slashdot effect was declining in 2005. 21 year olds today are younger than the decline, so it's safe to say a bunch of people probably haven't heard of it.

For anyone else wondering, The Rolling Stones was a popular band.

Still touring 60 years later.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_the_Rolling_Stones_con...

That should read "popular beat combo".

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Popular_beat_combo

For anyone else wondering, Reddit was an old website where you posted prompts and received comments, like a slow version of ChatGPT.

And yes. Reddit had hallucinations too. Often replied with inaccurate statements with utmost confidence and certainty.

What? Slashdot isn't that ancient. It peaked hardly 15 years back.

> hardly 15 years

In internet terms that's practically the Mesozoic

score 5: funny
