I don't care to associate with people who are offended by being corrected. They can sod off. And I never go to what you Americans call "parties".

> And I never go to what you Americans call "parties". Whenever you use quotes and they are directly followed by punctuation you must include the punctuation within the quotes.

"parties."

I've been on this site for nearly two decades. This is one of the best comments I've seen so far, lol.

They probably order their coffee via HTTP, too.

That's the American style, and it's stupid.

It's English, my fair cross-dressing sweaty nerd. Go read a book for once in your lifetime. Harry Potter at the very least.

“The best,” replied Severus Snape. -- Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, p.1

'I'm going to the library', said Hermione.

You put the punctuation where it makes sense. If it belongs to the quote, it goes inside. If it belongs to the sentence, it goes outside.

I recommend this book: Rebel with a Clause: Tales and Tips from a Roving Grammarian by Ellen Jovin

You clearly have no idea what you're talking about.

literally an edge case for parsers and a technical debt

That is a level of pedantry that I find pointless. Using the wrong word can lead to miscommunication. Omitting a comma can completely change the meaning of a sentence. Moving punctuation inside or outside of quotes? Makes no real difference.

It makes this funny conversation longer

Literally just watched the video of you posting this. Amazing how few people got the irony.

The comments on that video are wonderful. It's so heart-warming to see people laugh at Americans' "standards".

This type of pedantry doesn’t add to the discussion. You’re correcting someone’s spelling on the internet, it’s pointless except to make you feel superior, adds nothing. Make a salient point, bring something to the discussion please. Sorry I hurt your feelings bud.

Yes it does. The original commenter can learn how to spell better which makes clear communication easier, and don't forget that other people read internet discussions and they may be learning new words or realizing they also didn't know how to spell a word correctly. You seem offended at the prospect of people learning how to do something correctly, I don't get it.

MarkMarine, the person you responded to, is the original commenter. I agree with your point but clearly MarkMarine has no interest in learning how to communicate well.

I actually missed that, that makes the whole thing even funnier. Reacting this way to being corrected is almost as embarrassing as GitHub breaking merges :p

The point is to communicate more effectively and efficiently and reduce miscommunication. Using the wrong word is a great way to be misunderstood, especially when communicating with people from other cultures.

You guys are all ugly and you smell.

You didn't hurt my feelings, buddy. And if you don't understand what I did and why... pity.
