Thanks, my first thought was they were from 'Rendezvous with Rama' by Arthur C. Clarke.
And for those who haven't read that book, I highly recommend it!
P.D. Yes, it has sequels, written by a different author with a focus that seems the opposite than the one on the first book. Not recommended.
