Use podman-compose?

Or just use docker compose with podman. There's a section in arch's doc about that https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Podman

Enable the Podman socket and have it alias the Docker socket.

Shameless plug: Alternatively, if you are on NixOS, you can just use compose2nix.

I actually am, but want to keep configs more distro agnostic.

Your Docker Compose file remains the source of truth, so there is no “lock-in”. That’s the beauty of config generation :)

There are options, but my experience has not exactly been positive.

You can continue using `docker-compose` (the provider) with `podman compose`. It's the default provider if installed.
