Somehow, ill-supervised secret security services always attract and empower a cadre of Creepy McNasty sorts, whose interest in their nation's actual security and welfare are 95% performative.

And, somehow, only 5% of people are effectively interested in their nation's secret security services being well-supervised.

Unfortunately, espionage tends to attract “the ends justify the means” types, who then quickly lose track of their own moral compass.

They should have found a way of protecting “Beth” without exposing themselves. It’s really just a case of them being lazy and incompetent. Which is not something you want of your security service.
