An easy photo app fix: Photo app > scroll to bottom > Customize & Reorder > deselect everything but Media Types and Utilities.

Still shows ~35 of your most recent photos every time you open the app. It's insecure and an abomination.

Thanks! That made it a lot more useable again.

It's been the absolute worst experience since updating.
