Checking out multiple code editors takes time. Optimizing $99 purchases is sub-optimal for many people. Particularly in the context of professional software development.

Finding free stuff can be a fun hobby. There's nothing wrong with using free time in that pursuit. Other people make different choices.

You're assuming that because something costs $99, it's automatically going to be better than options which are cheaper of free?

I think he's implying that it's a decent bet when running a business, yes.

And it would be completely incorrect in the context of modern software development tools, where the best in class are open-source and free.

I am assuming that it is probably be good enough. Good enough is good enough because code editors are solutions in the context of engineering.

CotEditor and Nova aren’t in the same category. Nova organizes projects.

CotEditor just got an update adding a file/protect sidebar. I've not used it much so far, but it sure is nice to now be able to open folders in it.
