Only as free as the least free country, as three letter agencies from every country put an office in that country.

Very few people can agree what limits speech has. Some countries limit in certain ways, others don’t. Hell a lot of people can’t even agree on what “speech” means.

> Very few people can agree what limits speech has.

100% of countries have free speech limits though... even the US

"Free speech" as free speech absolutists think of it doesn't exist anywhere in the known universe

Why are you restating the comment you're replying to?

I'm not restating it, merely completing it, I'll rephrase it for you: nobody can agree on what the limits should be BUT everybody agrees there should be limits

even Elon Musk (praised be the world loudest free speech absolutist) bans "cis-gender" on his personal blog, Xitter.

apparently there's a screenshot out there of some Nazi tweeting "gas the Jews because they (some stupid Nazi reason)" and a reply saying "cisgender" and I'm sure you can guess which one has a tag under it saying it's been hidden from other people.

it's his personal blog, that's what people don't understand. he paid £40bn for it, he should be allowed to publish and support what he wants! what I don't understand is why others get offended when I call him a pathetic loser.

I believe peoples have a right to discuss whatever they want in perfect privacy. A messaging application advertising itself at "private" and "secure" shouldn't bow down at government requests. At least they should have dropped these slogans a long time ago... Anyway peoples aware of that already switched to a superior platform (signal, matrix...)

This seems more of a 2-party consent vs 1-party consent issue. Based on the wording it seems to refer to the ability of users to report content.

If you tell me something and I report that to a third party is a different situation than if the third party listened to our conversation.

I get what you are saying, if you report something you saw to the authorities (for example someone about to commit a grave crime) and show them voluntarily the conversation, no problems with that the platform isn't at fault here. But the technology shouldn't allow the platform to get access to the whole conversation, just what you want to show/report. And that would be by design.
