They can, but it's gone out of fashion since Mark Twain's times. If you really want to, I recommend Kant.

It's Bloomsday on Saturday - the last two sentences in
Ulysses
are 11,282 and 12,931 words long, respectively.

That's only because there's no punctuation. The sentences end, sort of, but the full stops have been omitted.
