Yeah, micro transaction just doesn't sound sustainable. There's a cost associated for making these transactions (computing for gateway, bank servers and everything and everyone in between) and that would never make sense for micro transactions.
All the ads and tracking have a massive cost. On a newspaper article, about 90% of the traffic is not content. Micro transactions are not limited by compute.
The biggest costs to online transactions, I believe, are related to fraud and fraud detection.
