A guy publish a bunch of embarrassing documents from the United States central intelligence agency, including private documents between diplomats.
Sweden raises sexual assault charges against him a few weeks later.
He flees to UK and seeks asylum at the Ecuador embassy, on grounds of being afraid that the charges were a false pretense to get him extradited to the US on charges of espionage. The US claimed it was false and there was no intention to get him extradited to the US.
He then get kicked out of the embassy, and put in UK jail.
Sweden then drops the charges.
US then charges him with espionage and request that he should be extradited to the US.
Decades later and the court battles continues. His health deteriorate to the point where UN special rapporteur on torture request that the whole affair need to end.

What does that mean? As a non-american nationality and citizenship are synonymous to me. What is the difference?
Here is a Twitter thread that shows the live recap of what was said in court:

This is not a broader comment either way; on Mr Assange's character or his culpability on any other changes. Be he a hero or a garbage person, it seems better to drop this charge. It is important to separate this and not reduce it to "Assange good" or "Assange bad". That should be irrelevant to the decision of this legal case.
Edit: I get that people feel strongly about this, but I am genuinely curious :)
I'm trying to avoid the strong feelings pro and con the person.
